Want to break free?

Want to break free?

Rather than write about one of my favourite #queen songs, I'm focussing today on how we can sustain our mental fitness.

Like all fitness routines - it's always a challenge to keep them going, to sustain them until they become a habit or part of who you are. How many of us have started physical fitness initiatives only to falter at different hurdles: Too busy, unexpected health issues, holidays, or even weather?

The same is true for our mental fitness. We get motivated by the idea of it, we try a few things to get more focused, more productive, more creative, then things wane over time.

What can you do about this?

Great news is quite a bit. Here are some of the techniques I work with senior leaders and entrepreneurs to integrate into their mental fitness so they truly achieve results - however ambitious they might be:

1)???? Being absolute about why you are doing it in the first place. Seriously, I know this sounds a bit basic, however, the number of leaders I work with haven't got the clarity of their future. Understanding your ultimate desires in work and life should be a top priority. If you don't you are on a hamster wheel which means someone or something else is in control.

2)???? Knowing what's important to you. Yep! I know, another basic one yet again, this is something that's seriously woolly for many leaders I work with. What are your values? When was the last time you spent some time reflecting on this for yourself?

I remember when I was first introduced to a values assessment. I didn't think I needed one. But oh boy! When I completed the assessment to qualify what I deemed important in life they were different. I'm not ashamed to say this because I want other people to recognise that life is just a learning journey.

This is a great values assessment that's free and online you can use. I would love you to share your values below in the comments - go on! Be brave! Also, a?quick?shout-out to the amazing?Lorraine Mair?who discovered this online version of my paper version that was a bit dated!!

3)???? Identity focussed?- Know who you are becoming by dedicating time and commitment to your mental fitness. This is important in helping you bring the stamina needed to sustain your fitness over time. What kind of person are you becoming as you are developing and maintaining your mental fitness? Think of a few words or phrases that might help you.

4)???? Make it small?- Mental Fitness isn't something you squeeze out pockets of time to fit it in. Mental Fitness success is about making things small enough they can integrate into your day and your practice.

5)???? Establish a few non-negotiables?- think about the area of mental fitness that's most important to you and pledge one or two non-negotiables for exercising that area of mental fitness every day. You need to push yourself a bit too! - these are some strong muscles we are dealing with, so we must ensure we are telling our brain who is the boss here!

6)???? Get support?- Anyone who invests in a physical fitness coach produces bigger results and faster. If that's what you want, you need support. Find a mindset coach or mentor who has expertise in mindset shift and the future (digital and data). You could start by simply buddying up. Support encourages you when you have a weak moment, support guides you when you need to adjust, support gives you accountability when you want to lean out.

Getting some basic boundaries in place for your mental fitness will ensure you keep up your practice regardless of what the external world throws at you.

If you want to succeed and thrive in this modern world, you have to focus on your mental fitness at some stage. Why wait? Make it now and get ahead of the curve.

Great article. Thanks. One thing that works for me is to have an "easy listening" music radio station playing in the background (white noise, blocks out lots of disruptive noise). In Houston, there are NO easy listening stations worth anything so there is an Internet-access station that I listen to all day.
