With its honest employee feedback, company connections, and recruiting program, Glassdoor has become a leader in the jobs and recruiting space. Glassdoor’s goal is to connect employees and organizations and provide potential employees with the most transparent information they can. Sixty percent of employees have buyers’ remorse after joining a company, and Glassdoor wants to give people the tools to choose the company that is right for them. And while Glassdoor gives millions of potential employees the tools to find the right company every year, their most talked-about feature is the annual list of the 50 Best Places to Work. Companies on their list, broken down by number of employees, receive recognition and become the next great thing in the workspace.
How can an organization land a spot on this coveted list? Two Glassdoor employees shared their insights into how every company can be a great place to work:
1. Don’t be afraid. Glassdoor’s annual employee choice award winners aren’t chosen by a survey—the data comes from existing employee reviews on their website. To be in the running, companies must have a certain amount of employee reviews on Glassdoor, which in most cases requires embracing the website. While adopting new technology and practices can be difficult for some organizations, Glassdoor leaders recommend that companies don’t be afraid—people are already discussing your company in person and online, so you might as well be aware of what they are saying.
2. Create a culture. Companies don’t land on the list just because of the great perks they offer employees, although that often plays a role. What sets award-winning companies apart is that they have strong corporate cultures that employees believe in. To gauge your culture, talk to every employee you can and get their feedback on the values, feel, and mission of the organization. Employees who are enthusiastic about a culture are more likely to be more positive and vocal about the company.
3. Be transparent. One of the most valued aspects of corporate culture across the board is transparency. Employees tend to feel much better about their organization when management is transparent with the company’s progress, goals, and actions. The more transparent a company is about its actions, whether it’s as small as allowing workers to bring pets to work, employees will feel more comfortable and include those points in their feedback and review.
4. Encourage honest feedback. The companies on the list are decided based on a unique algorithm that considers all of the recent reviews by employees. The bottom line is that to be in contention for the award, companies must encourage honest feedback. This not only helps their visibility on Glassdoor, but it also provides management with updated feedback about what employees really think and what they want to see the company do. Winning awards is great, but the real goal is to create the more efficient and best place for employees to work.
At the end of the day, all forward-thinking companies want to create an environment that empowers and values employees. By following these steps, you’ll be on your way to an effective futuristic workplace and possibly a spot on one of the best lists in the business.
