Want a 2021 New Year's Resolution? No More Broetry. Please.

Dear people in my LinkedIn Feed,

The TL;DR is this: "No more 'broetry' posts, that's your resolution".

This is a short "letter" to make it incredibly easy for you to find a New Year's Resolution. I used the fantastic Imgflip.com to provide a simple meme that you can retweet, reshare, repost or celebrate.

However, I would prefer that you print it out and tape it to your laptop keyboard or on your monitor. It's time to stop. You know it is.

Doesn't it get tiring

trying to come up

with a way to break up

sentences to game the system?

So it says this Broetry idea is specifically identified by this: "A clickbait, one-sentence opener, an emotionally charged anecdote that paints the subject in an overly flattering light, and ends with a clichéd life lesson or inspirational thought." But it also says: "The most salient feature of broetry is its?formatting?– short sentences and frequent line breaks" Let's call them point A and B respectively. My questions are, if point A is present but not point B, and vice versa, is it still Broetry? What about an anecdote that paints the subject in an unflattering light? It seems to me Broetry is two different ideas merged together for some kind of affect. What are you trying to stop doing specifically, telling a story a certain way or writing in short sentence format, or both? I'm just not sure what the intention is here or why these points are together yet. Maybe they are just frequently seen together and it's a guilt by association thing. I can see the point about formatting for conversation verses platform optimization. I just think the name "Broetry" makes no sense at all. Regardless of whether it's suppose to refer to something intentionally or, WWE Superstar Matt Riddle came up with the name, it's terrible branding in my opinion. I think you solve this issue just be resolving to write in a more Conversational Format. I don't however, see the point about story telling. Story telling is an art form that goes way back, and predates business marketing by centuries. Additionally, much of what is listed as indicators of "Broetry" are subjective to the individual, thus are only opinions which, are hard to generalize accurately. So I'm a no sale on this aspect at the moment and I'm not sure Broetry, outside a branding of several short sentences together that create a monotonous cadence. Marketing is all about catching attention, painting the subjects in overly flattering light, and making it relatable and good in the eyes of the individual consuming it. However, I'm open to understanding what's potentially better. So if you have an example of a better way to tell a success story without these aspects, I'm interested to check it out.

We're all a little guilty of this I think at least occasionally. Nature of the social media beast and personal branding scourge I think.
