Often times people are promoted from within an organization... then not REALLY given the tips and tools to be a good boss. Here are three easy to implement tips on how to be a better boss.
ONE:
Provide good feedback at least weekly. When a person receives praise, we release a chemical called oxytocin that helps us to feel good. When a person makes us feel good, we then begin to attribute that feeling good to the person providing the praise.
So this means, when leaders have positive conversations with employees or colleagues, that leader continues to give "little hits" of oxytocin to the employee.... the employee will enjoy being in the presence of that leader and will likely want to continue working for that leader. <----------THAT ALONE IS GOLD!!!! Just saying!
TWO:
Providing a flexible schedule allows for some level of autonomy for employees. Research show us that this can go a long way with employee retention. Flexible schedules could be as simple as allowing employees to come to work at any time and leave anytime as long as they are there from 10-2 and work a full 8 hours.
This example ensures everyone is there for possible meetings, but all employees are able to work around lifestyle needs such as parenting, appointments, working out or enjoying the afternoon at the beach or lake.
THREE:
Another tip for a person to be a good boss is to remember to Praise in public and Reprimand in private. Allowing other employees to know the great work a person does can go a long way in assisting the employee to feel good about their contributions. Retaining reprimands for private conversations allows the employee to maintain dignity and preserves ego and pride.
BOTTOM LINE: Great bosses provide praise in public and allow some autonomy for work/life balance.
