Walter Elias Disney
Consider?Walt Disney; animator, film producer, theme park architect, maker of dreams.?Has any single person had a greater impact on not only the world of entertainment, but perhaps most significantly on the universe of imagination? Sure you've got your Spielbergs and Lucases, obvious visionaries and masters at creating heroic characters, strange worlds, and fantastic imagery. But with Uncle Walt you got all of that first, starting back in the 30's.
He was obsessed with perfection. Working himself and his artists to exhaustion. Some claim he was a tyrant. His involvement with the House Un-American Activities Committee, as a strong anti-communist spokesman, drove many in the creative community away from him.
For all of his pure romanticized images of Americana and happy endings, he was a chain smoking obsessor, who occasionally fell into complete and sustained fits of depression.
So at the bottom of it all he was a man, not a machine, he was a person, not a multi-national entertainment conglomerate, he was an artist, not a logo.?His drive, energy, and yes, imagination moved mountains. America is different because of him, or more correctly America thinks about itself differently because of him.

3 年So true, Dave Summers! He was a flawed and complicted figure, but he was a true visionary, and most definitely embodied the classic Disney mantra, "If you can dream it, you can do it" (*even though this motto was not created by him, but by one of his Imagineers). And when you think about what the Walt Disney Company is today, it's amazing to that it all started with a little cartoon mouse named "Mortimer"...whose name was later changed -- at the insistence of his wife -- to "Mickey." ??

3 年When I think about the legacy of Walt Disney - I think about ScarJo and why she had to sue to her bounuses for her latest film I think about Disney hiring Congressman Howard Berman to extend the copyright laws time period I think about the Tivoli Gardens, in Copenhagen, where Walt got his inspiration for Disneyland Disney is about what happens when too much money is at stake The War out there is a battle between the haves and the have nots. For every Walt, there are a 1,000 wannabees. We used to call this the "long tail." Social Media and the Creator economy are the result of 1,000,000 people wanting some of the Pie which Disney dominates. Walt's legacy is the legacy of America and capitalism.

3 年???? Dave Summers the line between genius and insanity is very thin. But it’s important to remember that behind each iconic brand is a larger than life person driving towards the realization of their vision. Love them or hate them, we can never ignore them because they are the great change-makers.
