Walmart Supply Chain Internship Update

As I reach the midpoint of my internship at Walmart, I reflect on the journey so far. As an intern in the role of Area Manager at a Walmart Distribution Center in the grocery network I have had the pleasure of working with amazing leaders with a very strong culture and welcoming me with open arms. I am excited to share my experiences thus far.

Embracing Grocery Operations

Despite my understanding of Walmart's supply chain operations from my three-plus years with the company, transitioning from e-commerce to grocery has presented challenges and learning curves. However, my prior work experience and education have prepared me well for this opportunity. From shadowing managers to engaging in day-to-day conversations, the culture within this building has been remarkably positive. The guidance I've received has made this experience truly enjoyable and enriching.

This facility is divided into several departments: Dry goods, Freezer, Dairy, Deli, Meat, and Produce, alongside support departments like Quality Assurance.

Each department specializes in specific types of items. The Dry goods department stocks non-perishable items such as beverages, toilet paper, and pet food. The Freezer/ Dairy Deli departments operate in temperature-controlled environments, offering a variety of perishable goods each being stored.

Quality Assurance ensures that everything meets Walmart's quality standards. Their responsibilities include conducting audits on pallets before shipment to verify accuracy, absence of damage, and correct product selection.

Current Project

1.??? The first step of the project involved gaining an overview of Quick Pick remotes, understanding their operations, and identifying the wastes they eliminate when used to their full capacity.

2.??? Next, I began analyzing data to pinpoint areas where Quick Pick remotes could be optimally utilized, establishing baselines for future data tracking.

3.??? Subsequently, with guidance from mentors, I taught myself how to use Power BI through trial and error, creating a utilization sheet to integrate into the EDMS and monitor top loss for continued use beyond the internship.

4.??? Following that, I started working with departments and gathering associates who do not use the remote to conduct test studies.

5.??? Currently, I am nearing completion of the process to have every order filler in the building using the remote and am working on validating savings with finance.

My Takeaways

During my internship, I gained valuable insight on the day-to-day operations and all the work in preparing a day executing and producing daily expectations all while maintaining a safe and enjoyable work environment. ?

Effective communication: Clear and consistent communication is crucial for effectively managing change and ensuing alignment with project goals across the team

Associate engagement: Involving associates who are directly impacted not only provides different perspectives but also increases their likelihood of embracing the changes

Patience: I initially wanted rapid increases, but gathering data showed me that results take time, teaching me the importance of persistence and patience

Continuous Improvement: Always look for ways to improve and avoid getting too comfortable

Conclusion

My internship has been an incredible journey, working side by side with the leaders at my DC and forming connections along the way. I am very thankful for the opportunity to be exposed to the grocery network, gaining a different perspective on Walmart's supply chain and the complex process that allows the distribution center to serve Walmart and Sam's Club buildings for customers. I am grateful for the amazing team I have had the pleasure of working with and the new mentors I have gained along the way.
