Wallpaper & Your PR Strategy

Wallpaper & Your PR Strategy

The 1970s.??

Disco played from our stereos.??

Phones were on the wall and not in our pockets.??

And the only tweets we heard were from the birds outside.?

Fashion was vibrant and home decor was specific.?

When my wife Brenda and I purchased the home we live in today, one of the first aesthetic changes we made was taking down the 70s wallpaper that covered almost every single bedroom and painting the walls more neutral colors.?

This worked just fine until (our then) two little girls wanted bedrooms that highlighted their personalities.??

Emily wanted a pastel green for her walls and Elizabeth wanted a muted shade of blue. So, round two of paint was carefully applied.??

We watched that paint fade as our girls grew up, each little scratch or nick in the paint, a story to go with it.?

Our daughters, Emily and Elizabeth, sit in our old wallpapered kitchen with my dad.

The girls grew up and moved out and recently Brenda and I decided it was time for a fresh look.??

We are painting the bedroom walls once more. Hopefully, for the last time (for a while!).?

Instead of moving bookbags and dolls, we are moving boxes of memories and electronics. And it’s a lot tougher these days! How did we accumulate so much stuff?!?

It got me thinking about the many layers these walls have seen and how it’s similar to a PR strategy.?

You start bold. You go for it. The grand opening. The launch. There’s a lot to talk about, media attention is strong.??

Then, things settle down and it’s time for a fresh coat. A more nuanced approach. You stay the course. Keep your name out there, show people why you do the work that you do and find consistency in your messaging.??

Then, your story adds another chapter, and you’ll need to add a new layer. And another and another.???

You move offices, you hire 10 new people, you expand your services, you partner with someone – whatever it might be – you are ready to shout to the world again, this is our ever-evolving story and we want to share it!??

Sometimes it’s tough adding new layers. The walls have seen many before and it might be a challenge replacing an old image with a new one. But with hard work and dedication, the older layers tend to blend with the new and come together in a beautiful way.??

For some, there will be a final layer. For others, someone else will come in and paint their own beginning. Each layer in your strategy, and really, each layer of your story is important.?

Ideally, with each layer, you are reminded of how it began and allow each transition to flow into the next.??

When we started WordWrite, our home office walls were covered in bright pink and white stripes, part of that 70s charm and now, in our downtown office, our fourth location removed from those walls, we still pay homage to the early days with accent walls of bold colors.??

We’ve embraced our story through every layer, and we encourage you to do the same.??

To dig deeper into your Capital S Story and paint the masterpiece we know you have already been creating behind the scenes, reach out anytime and let’s chat.??
