There Is No Wall, There Are Only Bricks…

I was reading Hollywood superstar Will Smith’s biography “Will” and this statement really rang a bell in me.

This is a lesson Will learnt from his father. His father told him and his brother one day while building a wall;

”There is no wall, there are only bricks”

It’s a step by step process. You take one step and then move on to the next. It’s like the brick laying process. Global Talent Acquisition is also an equivalent process. You take one step at a time. Before you look for your next career move, you should follow a step by step process.

Making your next career move is something that you need to do cautiously. Many are in a hurry to get into their next job. Job and a career are two distinctive aspects. A job is done for the sake of getting a monthly paycheck; it’s short-term thinking; whereas, a career is a long term, prospective aspect where you clearly plan the goals what you want to achieve.

You have to be patient with your process of making your next career move.

Because;

If you rush the process, you will pay the price.

Desperation is not the solution to your problem.

Think of this career transition phase of your life as a way to reflect on your career and look for the long term opportunities where you can make an impact with your skills and passion.

Here are 5 steps (bricks) to follow if you are dissatisfied in your current role and looking for a career change;

  1. Take time to reflect on you career aspirations and goals

Setting clear goals is absolutely crucial in your next career move. Ask few questions before you proceed. What type of role would I be passionate about? Which role would suit my skills. Researching on the industries that you want to get into and answering these questions will help you make a proper decision about your next career move.

2. Evaluate your skills and figure out areas in which you could invest in becoming successful

Investing your time and money in developing your skills is the way forward. We are living in a rapidly evolving world. What we learn today, may be obsolete tomorrow. However, keeping a track on these developments and developing our skills are what we can do to keep up with the pace. In the modern world, developing your skills is one tap away. You can join webinars, sign up for certifications, talk to experts, etc. Your exceptional knowledge will give you the edge over other candidates. Knowledge is the next stage of success.

3. Be strategic in your career search

Create a strategy to approach your job search without getting in to randomly or in an ad-hoc manner. Think before you take action. The thought process in creating thins strategy is essential. Reach out to companies that share your values and align with your skills and passion. Take time to read about the role that you are applying for and highlight your skills and experience that align with the role in your cover letter.

4. Prepare, prepare, prepare for interviews

If you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Why you are interested in the role is a crucial aspect of communication you should be prepared for in an interview. Along with this, communicate how you can add value to the particular role. Be well prepared for the interview and show your keen interest.

5. Build a strong network that works

Why did I mention “build a strong network that works”? There is a reason for it. Because, some networks don’t work; since you are having the working people in your network, ones that would not lift you. Therefore, you have to be extremely mindful when building your network. It’s not about the quantity, it the quality that matters. If your network is top-notch, they will do the rest for you. It’s invaluable to have a strong network in your next career move.

These steps will help you think again about your career transition process. Ensure that you follow this process before think of a career change. Do not hesitate to make a move even though you feel dissatisfied in your current role.

Great things take time.

Wish You Success!
