Walking The Talk

We’ve all heard the saying, “Do as I say, not as I do,” but is it the right way to guide and teach our children? Let’s explore this through the story of a parent who gave incredible advice to her children about pursuing dreams but forgot to follow her wisdom.

This parent, let’s call her Sarah, is an intelligent and talented woman. She encouraged her children to chase their dreams, to take calculated risks, and to never settle for a life that didn’t make them feel fulfilled. Sarah knew the importance of following one’s heart and passion. She told her kids that the sky was the limit and that they should never fear failure because it’s a stepping stone to success.

However, regarding her life, Sarha lived in a comfort zone. She had dreams and aspirations, too, but she sacrificed her happiness and fulfillment for the illusion of stability. She was afraid to leave her job, even though she knew it wasn’t where she wanted to be.

Sarah had excellent advice for her children, but she wasn’t walking the talk.

Why do we sometimes give excellent advice to others that we don’t follow ourselves? There are many reasons: fear of failure, self-doubt, imposter syndrome—“maybe I’m not good enough”—internal resistance—that negative inner voice—and, of course, money issues.

The challenge with this behavior is that we need to pay more attention to the power of our actions as parents. We often overlook the fact that our children absorb more from our actions than from our words. Sarah’s children saw her staying in a job that did not bring her joy or satisfaction, and they learned that it’s okay to settle for less than their dreams.

Whether we realize it or not, our actions become the lessons we teach our children.

It is important to remember that the advice we give is meaningful only when we follow it ourselves. Don’t let fear, self-doubt, or excuses hold you back from pursuing your dreams, for your actions are the most potent lessons you can impart to your children. Be the role model they need to see, and show them that dreams are worth chasing, no matter the challenges.

So, are you living a life where you are walking the talk? It’s a thought-provoking question that encourages self-examination and personal growth. It underscores the importance of aligning one’s words with one's actions to lead a more genuine and meaningful life.
