The Beatitudes
5?When[a] he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain.[b] After he sat down his disciples came to him. 2?Then[c] he began to teach[d] them by saying:
3?“Blessed[e] are the poor in spirit,[f] for the kingdom of heaven belongs[g] to them. 4?“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.[h] 5?“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6?“Blessed are those who hunger[i] and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. 7?“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8?“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9?“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children[j] of God. 10?“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. 11?“Blessed are you when people[k] insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely[l] on account of me. 12?Rejoice and be glad, because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.

????As we look ahead this week to what I always think of as the 'Autumn Triduum' of All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day, I am reminded how intimately we are connected to our beloved dead and all who have gone before us in faith and love.
??? Dorothy Day is my favorite example of the communion of saints in practice as a member of Christ's Mystical Body. Dorothy understood herself as a part of a community that reaches back through the generations and extends into the future.
??? For Dorothy, the communion of saints extended far beyond those included in the Roman Church's official list.
??? The communion of saints embraces the poor and forgotten, like those I have spent over thirty years hanging out with; the saints embrace the immigrants who faced a potentially lethal environment, cartel violence, corrupt officials, and governments on an obstacle course of death along the border; the border holds many such stories of border 'Saints", who, in death and life, suffered at the intersection of worlds. The saints embrace those who have lived and died in obscurity serving their brothers and sisters.
??? The saints embrace Martin Luther King, Jr. and those who are not Christian such as Gandhi, for saints do not have to be of any one faith.
??? Today I remember four saints who have gone before me, Vicki Yeley, my closest friend; my parents, Wade and Virgil Smith, and my son Zach; I remember my living saints, who support me and our ministry financially, and with their love.
??? The saints are far from perfect, they were and are holy. There is a difference. There are many paths to holiness, yet they wind down to one single path--that of love, a love that transforms all differences into one of caring for another. As Dorothy once said, "I try" when told she was not a good Christian. So let's keep on 'trying'!
??? A great cloud of witnesses testifies to the glories that come to those who persevere. So let us walk our sacred path with confident trust that the God who created and redeemed us is longing for us to arrive at the mansion that has been prepared for us since the beginning of time. Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!

May the work of
“figuring people out”
Never replace the work of knowing people
And loving people
And giving them room
To confound
And inspire
And surprise me
