Walking the Path (part 2)

Walking the Path (part 2)

I recorded my first Envision Speakers Series podcast in July 2023. With my friends and colleagues Sheyenne Kreamer , Mitch Gray , Dori Staehle, MBA , and Jerry Klingerman , we addressed the topic of men’s mental health and suicide prevention. This was a much-needed conversation then; it is a much-needed conversation now.

You can listen to the conversation here.

The Envision Speakers Series - Men's Mental Health and Suicide Prevention - YouTube

Almost one year later, I have continued the course. In 2024, I have a specific focus on addressing suicide through awareness, prevention, and education. I will use my conversations on the Envision Speakers Series to gain insights into how to help people who struggle with suicide ideation. Beyond that, I want to ensure that family members and the community at large have a deeper appreciation of how to help. If we can do anything, we can have #conversationsthatmetter.

As I prepare to bring the Envision Speakers Series to North Carolina in a collaborative effort with Sheyenne Kreamer and Richard Mabe, I ask for your support . . . financial and otherwise . . . so that we can address the impact of suicide at the collegiate level – with students and their families. ????

Key Takeaways

Listen to Your Body

Dori shared her personal journey of recovery after a life-altering accident, emphasizing how she “accidentally” learned how to heal herself through drumming. She also highlighted the power of drumming as a tool for emotional healing as well. There is science behind therapeutic drumming. At the cellular level, our bodies respond to the vibrations of the drum. Our cells repair and regenerate themselves, binging wellness back to the body. ?

Follow Your Heart

Sheyenne consistently gives us the most basic motto to follow to live a fulfilling life . . .? follow your heart. Having seen too many people take their own lives, she recognized early in her life that our basic, intrinsic nature is generally right. Too often, we are influenced by well-intentioned people to follow after the “American Dream”. However, that dream does not always align with who we are. And that’s where problems begin. By following your heart, we learn to live in a place where our energies and efforts are best used. ?

Men's Mental Health

Jerry discussed the themes of his book, focusing on the marginalization of men and the importance of reclaiming one's identity beyond societal expectations. He encouraged men to recognize their worth beyond their professions. Truly, this is foundational for everyone. We are more than just a title or a role. When we minimize ourselves and our value, we end up losing our vision and purpose for life. When this happens, the path we walk goes down a long, lonely road.

Existential Value

Mitch spoke about the existential value of individuals, emphasizing the power of saying "I am" as a reminder of inherent worthiness. He also stressed the significance of daily anchors and seeking support when needed. The idea of an “anchor” is not unique to Mitch, but it has tremendous value to all of us. Meaning, when life feels out of balance, we should rely on our anchors . . . our daily habits . . . ?to keep us stable and moving forward. Whether this is going for a walk or taking a hot bath, maintaining a sense of routine keeps our minds stable and focused. ?

?Words of Wisdom

  1. Share your wisdom with others. Reflect on the challenges you've overcome and consider how your experiences can help someone else navigate their journey.
  2. In moments of stress, take a breath, take a break, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Remember that you have unique gifts to share with the world.
  3. Men should recognize their worth beyond their professions. Seek support and understand that everyone matters, often in ways we may not fully comprehend.
  4. Create daily anchors to provide a sense of purpose and belief. Don't hesitate to ask for help; vulnerability is a strength that can lead to profound connections.

Suicide Survivor

As you know, I am training to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2025. This is called a thru-hike because I intend to hike the entire trail northbound from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Katahdin, Maine. Please consider supporting the hike through my GoFundMe page.

Walking the Path ?

As a two-time suicide attempt survivor, I recognize the importance of human connection. When I wanted to die by suicide, I had no one to turn to, to trust in, or tell my story to. This is a lonely experience . . . an experience no one should go through. My mission is to have the conversations . . . and to change the conversation . . . so we are connected and feel validated for our own feelings.

Your Story Matters

If you have made the attempt to end your life, let’s talk. I would like the opportunity to share your story with the world. If you have been left in the wake of someone who has died by suicide, please share your story with me as well.

And if you are still grieving the loss of someone close to you who ended their own life, I know people who can help.
