Walking to the Destination

Stoic Quote of the Week

When the standards have been set, things are tested and weighed. And the work of philosophy is just this, to examine and uphold the standards, but the work of a truly good person is in using those standards when they know them.

-Epictetus

What I learned this week:

The more I work directly with people through my coaching and mentoring, the more I am fascinated with people and how different we all are. I spent the last week in Cabo at a resort on vacation, and I found myself watching people and how they moved. I've always been fascinated with the way we walk and how we walk. Each of us has our own gait and stride. I have a few friends that I know well enough that I can tell it is them by their walk. This week as I sat watching people move around the resort, I saw everything from the barely pick up the feet shuffle to we better move out because we are late. But are they in a hurry or late? As I watched the other guests, I've often wondered if the person that is slowly strolling as if no care in the world and no purpose to gain really had no purpose. Maybe they are dreading what they are going to? Or maybe they are enjoying the journey. People move in such different ways. The resort was full of people from all over the world. Most of the people there were Americans ranging in age from mid-20s to 60s. Each of them had their own strolling style. Some walked with a pace like they were late, and others just moved. Some walked with a gait that indicated injuries, and others had the full stride of a power walk. I am aware enough of myself to know that I lean pretty heavily towards the walking with the intention of getting there. That doesn't mean that I'm not observing as I go, but when I am walking, I rarely walk without an intention for arrival. The arrival is the prize but the journey to the destination is just as important as the destination itself. The other thing I observe is how I judge someone who seems to have no desire to move. There is an air of confidence around the person that steps out, like he knows where he is going and knows that the ground will be there with the next heel strike. As you about your week, I hope you stride is out like you know the ground will be under your feet and the destination is a place that you want to be.

Planning thought of the week:

Before you sit down with your team to develop the plan, have a vision for what you, the leader, want to achieve. As the leader, your responsibility is to establish the plan's outcome. There is no need to begin putting together a plan until you have a vision of what you want to achieve. It doesn't have to be crystal clear, but the vision has to exist. As you develop the plan, you gain more clarity in your vision.

Business idea I heard about or thought of:

Hunting and fishing guides are still a thing and will be as long as people like me want to go out and about. These people love what they do because they are not going to get rich, nor are they comfortable. I spent half a day on 32 ft boat off the coast of Cabo, Mexico, and the captain and first mate worked their butts off and loved it. These two guys make less than $100 a day minus tips, and they earn every cent of it. I've also talked with several hunting guides, and there is not much money in that either. Yes, they get a lucrative client and land a big fish or a trophy game, and they'll get a nice tip. Not something to count on for livelihood. The interesting thing is that the people that love what they do are the guides. I wonder what it would look like for a handful of guides to pool their assets, lease land for hunts, or buy a few fishing boats. Pool their assets like a co-op, not as a strike against the current business model but as a competition to become independent.

Veteran opportunity of the week:

If you are in the Colorado Front Range area, you are in luck because the VA is hosting two Vet Fests. One at the VA Hospital in Denver on 21 July and one in Colorado Springs at National Guard Recruiting Center on Voyager 7-9 August. These two events aim to have experts available for veterans to speak to someone in person and get all their benefits questions answered. You get some additional details here .

Someone I met this week:

One of the fun things about hanging out at a resort is the other people that are at the resort for the same reasons I'm there. Ms. Suzanne and I met a couple from Nashville and chatted with them over before dinner and drinks. Trip and Dawn told us they had charted a half-day fishing trip later in the week and invited us to join them. Truthfully, we hadn't even planned on leaving the resort but what an opportunity! Of course, I accepted before Ms. Suzanne had a chance to think about it. Let's just say that 5 hours on a fishing boat (no luxury) made for catching fish was quite the experience. A blue marlin, dorado (mahi-mahi), shark, and seven tunas in 5 hours was not just an experience but an experience of a lifetime. Thanks to Trip and Dawn for being the type of folks who like to meet new people and are open to sharing with others. I can't wait to see pictures of the blue marlin you caught hanging on the wall in your house.
