Walk down the aisle with me this Mindset Wednesday

This weekend I have the great pleasure of walking my second son, Billy, down the aisle and towards what I can only hope will be a lifetime of happiness, love, and support.
As I prepare for this momentous occasion, I can’t help but reflect on my own marriages, and what made them both challenging and rewarding.
A 16th century Bishop once said: ‘Marriage has less beauty but more safety than the single life. It’s full of sorrows and full of joys. It lies under more burdens, but it is supported by all the strengths of love. And those burdens are delightful.’
I couldn’t agree more. Young love is beautiful but can also be na?ve. We are sometimes fooled into thinking that every day will be romantic and wonderful, and yet, marriage is full of highs and lows. It may be the joining of two people, but also two minds, two histories, two sets of baggage, and two families. Not everything that we think or feel will be mirrored by our partner and that can be tough. Equally, our own way of communicating or dealing with conflict may lie in total opposition to our partner’s coping mechanisms and communication patters. And yet, we make it work because we love each other. At the centre of our marriage is not only a rock-solid friendship, but a mutual respect that allows room for vulnerability and humanity.
I want to share the same words with you as I will my son this weekend. Not every day will be perfect. In fact, some days will be hard, and you might even feel like things would be easier on your own. But in your marriage you will find partnership. Someone who you can share life’s struggles and joys with. Someone you can always come home too, lean on, and depend. Life will become fuller, louder, messier, and more unpredictable. It will keep you on your toes, but then open its arms and embrace you exactly when you need it most.
