So many weight loss companies and products are scrambling to stay alive amid the GLP-1 revolution.? How can any company or product compete with this quick fix?
I am not at all surprised. As a weight management professional for over 40 years, I’ve witnessed how consumers ?show unbelievable interest in any new weight loss drug or product that promises rapid results…even if it comes with dire physical consequences.? Bottom line: People will do just about anything to lose weight except eat sensibly and exercise regularly.
One thing does surprise me: How quickly so many companies ?jumped on the GLP-1 gravy train. ?For example, for over half a century WeightWatchers (WW) successfully operated by inspiring their clients to eat sensibly. They did so via weekly meetings where clients met and talked to each other. No one felt alone on their weight loss journey and these personal connections fueled retention. Disbanding these meetings was obviously a mistake. WW eliminated the essence of what made them so successful.? ?
I know what it takes to be successful and I have the data to prove it. Sensible Eating + Sensible Exercise + Motivation + Personalization = Success (aka Behavior Change). I have spent my entire career working with individuals who were trying to lose weight.? I’ve clinically collected weight loss and accompanying body change data from clients for decades. I recorded body composition changes in response to the chosen weight loss path- diet, exercise or both.? My data spans all scenarios - individuals using weight loss products or specific commercial diet programs, those on medically supervised programs, and those following a sensible eating and sensible exercise approach (of course).

We are currently building a free app to broaden our reach because the behavior change conversation has been silenced by GLP-1s. This is alarming for many reasons.? First, dramatically restricting caloric intake will result in fast weight loss.? But, it’s not sustainable because the body adapts and weight loss diminishes. Second, going off the drugs is even harder as your body fights to get back to (what it feels is a) “normal weight.” Additionally,? it doesn’t make sense for someone to choose to inject themselves for the rest of their life without knowing the long term effects and financial impact.? Finally, information about GLP-1s can be misleading. ?Yes, using these drugs may lower risk for many chronic illnesses (heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension). To be clear, lowered risk is due to weight loss which is the key driver of all these improvements. ?
Let’s get real about this.? Yes, there is a fundamental need for these drugs for a certain segment. But, drug companies want the entire 48% of the overweight/obese US Adult population using GLP-1s.? If weight management is a problem now, wait until we experience the longer term physical and financial impact of half the country taking this drug. ?
