Wake-Up Call

Wake-Up Call

Dear Friends,

Have you ever had a wake-up call? Matheus Moura, who I interviewed on this week's episode of What's Essential, had two.

The first was painful: a series of panic attacks because he said yes to everything, always.

The second was even more painful: the death of his baby daughter.

Out of this tragedy came new courage. He abandoned his old ways of working.

When his manager asked him to do things last minute he no longer felt compelled to sacrifice his health, his life, or his family. He said, "No, I am already committed to this family event."

Over time his manager came to respect him; he thinks of Matheus' time as valuable. After all, if you don't value your own time and commitments, why will anyone else value them?

He told me the reason he was willing to engage in these awkward conversations was that "I didn't have anything to lose."

His old way of living and working had already taken his health, his relationships, and his family. This old way of working was not working. So he tried something new.

He got his life back. Listen to what happened here.

Here is how to apply this right now:

1) Think of something trivial you are overinvesting in.

2) Write down what it is costing you in terms of:

  • Health
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Important projects

3) Write down how you will respond next time you are asked to do something that will violate these,

Thank you, really, for reading.

Love this. Every yes requires a no. But, no's don't require us to say yes to something new - they can just give us space to be :)

If ever I needed your excellent advice, that time would be right now. I have a difficult encounter coming up today. I'll remember this article as I proceed through today and any time I just have to say no. Thank you!
