A one of best and critically acclaimed play by Irish Novelist Samual Beckett released in early 50’s. May be considered as best tragic comedy play.
The name of the play itself suggest that its for waiting for someone or something.
The play revolves around two homeless men, Vladimir and Estragon, you can call the, vagrant, waiting for some Mr Godot near a tree on countryside road.
They have a firm belief that Mr Godot will come and help them. They had never seen him before or even do not know his capabilities, so the theme of the play is pitiful wait for the hope.
Throughout the play this hope is constructed in the form of different persons or situations.
The paly starts with lines
Estragon: Nothing to be done.
Vladimir: I am beginning to come round to that opinion.
They somehow need to pass the time and continue to wait for some Mr Godot which is their hope. So in entire play, they devise some games, discuss on lot of things, doing non-sense acts. Infact they insult each other and at one point of time they even tried for suicide also. Some other characters came , but for them its just meant for passing the time.
They do nothing but just to wait for Mr Godot. As they believe that one day he will come and help them.
Broadly there are many interpretations of this play like religious, political and social and different ways to look at it. And everyone will have different opinions about this Wait and Hope.
For some of us the current lockdown situation might be the resemblance with the plot in play like Endless Wait and each one is trying different things to kill the time. And there is hope that Mr Godot ( Something /Someone )will come and help us to improve the situation.
This play is all about faith, anxiety, trust, nervousness, hopefulness, confidence, mercy, power , positivity and negativity too.
Only we have to choose the correct themes!!
The play ends with line.
Estragon: Shall We Go?
Vladimir: Yes. Lets Go.
But they don’t move. And Wait and Hope continues………
