Tim Walz's son Gus has a learning disorder. Can his visibility help disabled Americans?
Tim Walz, the official running mate for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, has spoken openly and lovingly about his 17-year-old son, Gus, who has a nonverbal learning disorder, anxiety disorder, and ADHD.
Walz and his wife, Gwen, said recently in a statement to PEOPLE Magazine | PEOPLE.com that they never considered Gus’ conditions an obstacle.
“It’s a good thing when people in politics, who are running for office, are comfortable discussing disability issues and don’t view it as a topic that is taboo” said Zoe Gross , director of advocacy for the Autistic Self Advocacy Network . “because we need to be comfortable discussing disability as a society, just like we talk about the needs of any marginalized population.”

The trials of a Paralympian with a hidden disability
Christie Raleigh Crossley PLY has trained for most of her life to be an Olympic swimmer. After surviving two car crashes and a brain tumor, she is finally going for gold next week in the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Absolute legend.
Some disabilities are easy to quantify — amputated limbs, short stature. But athletes with neurological impairments, like Raleigh Crossley, are harder to classify.
"The better [Crossely] swims, the more suspicion and accusations come her way. How do you prove a disability to people who cannot see it? “I’ve been the brunt of a lot of that bullying,” she said. “And it’s hard, because, like, today you see a great day — you’re seeing a very mobile, moving day. I’m also very good at masking things. Like, for instance, I haven’t been able to move my hand for the past 20 minutes.”
Musk's ban on remote work at X beats disability bias claim, for now...
This past Wednesday, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit accusing X , formerly Twitter , of disability discrimination after Elon Musk banned remote work for all employees. Though the proposed class action failed to show a targeted offense for disabled employees, a four-week extension has been made to file amended lawsuit.
The plaintiff was a former engineering manager and cancer survivor who claims he was fired shortly after Musk acquired X for refusing to report to the office during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Remember when Musk tweeted it was "morally wrong" to work from home?
Anyways, do be sure to check back in for an update in four weeks.
