Awards are not just a way to acknowledge success, but also to recognize other qualities such as skill, effort, and excellence. Recognizing the outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema, the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's (I&B) Directorate of Film Festivals have announced Veteran Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman as the next Dada Saheb Phalke awardee.

Rehman was known for her willingness to experiment with different roles. She played a variety of characters, from the tragic heroine in Pyaasa to the playful and mischievous girl in Guide. Rehman also excelled in dance performances, and her dance sequences in films such as Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Teesri Manzil are still remembered today. Rehman's career was not without its struggles. She faced discrimination because of her Muslim religion. She was also often stereotyped as a tragic heroine. However, Rehman overcame these challenges and carved a niche for herself as one of the most versatile and talented actresses in Indian cinema.

The award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of ?1,000,000 (US$13,000). It is named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke, who is regarded as the "father of Indian cinema". Phalke made India's first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra, in 1913. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was instituted in 1969 to commemorate Phalke's contribution to Indian cinema. The first recipient of the award was Devika Rani, a renowned actress and filmmaker of the early Indian cinema.

Over the years, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award has been presented to some of the most iconic and influential figures in Indian cinema, including Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy ,Dilip Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Yash Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan, Asha Bhosle. The award is a testament to their talent, dedication, and passion for the art of filmmaking. The award is also a celebration of the diversity and richness of Indian cinema. It recognizes the contributions of filmmakers from all regions and languages of India.
