"W" for "Well informed", "T" for "Trustworthy" & "H" for "Hardworking": APPLYING THE G.R.O.W.T.H. FRAMEWORK #14

In continuation of last edition of the newsletter on the G.R.O.W.T.H framework, we look at the application of the other "key words" and hence the "key principles" of the G.R.O.W.T.H. framework.

W: Well Informed

Being well-informed is critical to professional success. Decide on which industry / what kind of job you want to be in

Read the news – both local and global news on this from different companies

Become an expect in your field. Become so good that people just have to have you. Learn and know everything on your field such as :

·What kind of companies are there in this field?

·How is money made in this industry?

·What are the upcoming technologies related to this industry?

·Who are the key people in the industry? In india? Outside it?

·What are the laws which govern this industry? Specific to this?

·Which publications cover news on this? Subscribe and learn from it

·Are there FB pages? LinkedIn pages? Blogs written by industry experts? Leaders? E-newsletters – which are free – which you can subscribe to?

?Learn as much as possible so that you can speak the same language spoken by guys who are there in the industry

?Set up Google alert.

?But, try a few subjects, learn a few things – even if you – at first – think – you may not like them.

?If you can opt for a double major, go for it.

?What it also says is that you’re not afraid to take on more than the norm, to go the extra mile.

??Doing a little bit extra can give you a lot of advantages.

W : Wise

Geta mentor who has been there and done that is one of the best ways to get career advice.

?It is very common in the executive circles to have a mentor.

?In fact, the best of the CEOs have mentors who guide the CEOS – goes onto show how much mentorship we all need

?A mentor is a professional adviser who agrees to provide expertise to mentees

?He helps them in their career, develop their skill set and experience, and build their networks.

T : Trustworthy

Gaining leadership experience and demonstrating leadership success can be accomplished at any age or stage of life

?It could be the Girl Scouts / Boy Scouts

?It could be the NCC (National Cadet Corps)

?It could be team games or clubs in your school / colleges

?You would have already shown some leadership in your life so far

?It could be as sports team captains / student government officers / club presidents.

?Employers also like these kind of people who have had some experience running things in their colleges

?The skill sets that make you successful in college teams /clubs - are the same ones which help in business too

?The trick is to take any leadership experience you have and translate that into stories that will impress employers

T : Tireless:

You may want or need a part-time job to make money. Many young people don’t consider that a part-time job can help their career plans, but it absolutely can. You just need to be strategic.

?Many students / youngsters take whatever job they can get,

?But, if you can look at and get a part time work related to the industry that you want to work in, then that adds a lot more to your final job capabilities and experience.

?Also, while working – whatever part time job it might be – it offers a chance to learn skills – many time – transferable skills – which can be added to your resume and your LinkedIn profile:

?Customer/client service / Communication skills /Managing gadget /Meeting deadlines /Managing people /Programming /Social media management /Patience /Leadership/responsibility /Teamwork /Problem solving /Time management Multitasking /Prioritizing

?If jobs are difficult to get, one option is temp work: may not be ideal but which still offers some benefits

?Temping is similar to being an intern—you are able to gain on-the-job, in-the-office experience

?The length of commitment is up to you.

?Internship the employer knows you are there to learn. In a temping : there is no training / coaching.

?Get a temp job that will help your career prospects; in an industry that interests you; ideally in a major company

?If you’re unsure of what industry you’d like to work in, do your best to get a temp job in a major company.

?Think like an employee

?Assume everyone around you is watching you; be on your best behaviour; you have nothing to lose; everything to gain

?Ask for meetings with HR / department head on a regular basis; update them on what you do; talk about your learnings

?Keep a journal and note down your learnings on a regular basis for it to be updated on your resume & LinkedIn profile

T : Tenacious :

If you have been a very good student all your life, you would have had great success in your studies.

?You would have gone to good schools / colleges.? You have not seen failures.

?Unfortunately, if this is the case, when you do face setbacks, it might end up being devastating.

?This is why those who have faced failures early in their life become more successful in business life later on

?So, failing is ok. They happen. The only thing which matters is how quickly you are able to Bounce Back

H : Hardworking

Some companies have organized internship programs. Some have more of an informal program. Some offer sUmmer. Some – year around. With pay / without pay. It doesn’t matter what it is – but go for it

?It helps you to learn about real world by working with real people on real problems.

?Additionally remember : Internships build your résumé.

?Internship experience can and should appear on your résumé and LinkedIn profile.

?The better the brand name of the company, the more impressive this experience will be to prospective employers. An internship of virtually any kind allows you to get real professional experience under your belt.

?Besides having a job to list on your résumé, you will also have completed projects to discuss during job interviews, which allows you to show results you’ve achieved in a professional setting.

??Internships build your professionalism.

Internships are also a great chance to learn some of the basics of business interaction

?Establish yourself as very useful? / indispensable / unforgettable.

?Most interns don’t take themselves seriously enough.

?Assume you are responsible for that business and give it your best shot.

?Internships build your contacts.

?Every person you work with during your internships is a contact to add to your growing network.

?If you succeed in your internship and impress people, you may be able to call on them in the future for reference

?Internships build your industry knowledge.

?Internships also help you to decide on the industry and company also – you get the first hand feel of working there in it

H : Happy

?You can get stressed out in your job. Especially if you are going to industry after a relaxed kind of college, the pace of life can look alien to you. So, meditation and exercise of any kind adds to your de-stressing

?Any sort of physical exertion keeps your mind fresh and helps you be as creative as possible.

?Your commitment to completing a challenging event like a marathon or a triathlon stands out to recruiters as well – they will see you as a goal driven individual
