How did the celebration of International Women's Day begin?

In 1908, 15,000 women marched in New York City to demand voting rights, for reduced working hours and better wages. According to the announcement of the Socialist Party of America, a year later, in 1909, the first National Women's Day was celebrated in the United States on February 28. Clara Zetkin, leader of the Women's Office of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, proposed the idea of celebrating International Women's Day in 1910. He suggested that women should celebrate International Women's Day in every country to pursue their demands. Let us tell you here that more than 100 women from about 17 countries agreed to this suggestion in an international conference and thus International Women's Day was established. Its main objective at this time was to get women the right to vote. International Women's Day was first celebrated on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. After two years, its date was changed to March 8 in 1913, and since then it is celebrated every year.

According to the UN, the theme of International Women's Day 2020 is "I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women's Rights". This theme has been aligned with the United Nations' new multi-lingual campaign, Generation Equality, which is the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This marks the anniversary. It was adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China in 1995.
