W. Kamau Bell and Kate Schatz on anti-racism

Humor can be such a powerful tool for talking about uncomfortable things. It sometimes allows us to cut closer to the emotional truth of an issue, or stay in conversation about it longer. Today’s guests on the Hello Monday Podcast have embraced humor to talk about racism.

And I know what you may be thinking: those two words don’t belong in the same sentence. But if that’s where your mind is at, then you haven’t met W. Kamau Bell and Kate Schatz . Kamau is a comedian and Emmy Award winning tv host. You may have seen him in the CNN docu-series United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell. Kate is an activist and the author of the “Rad Women” book series. (I think I was likely one of her best customers when they cam out a few years ago!)

Kamau and Kate's latest project requires you to bring a pencil. It’s called: DO THE WORK: An anti-racism workbook. It’s designed to encourage more people —especially white people —to work toward dismantling racism. Not just on a one-off basis, but as a practice of day-to-day life. The book is action-oriented, and pulls on humor to help us continue to think and talk about the world around us and our reaction to it. And, it's funny—like that kind of ha, ha funny that keeps us turning the pages not out of obligation, but the desire to be entertained. In that way, it's a masterpiece—and a guide. At the end of our conversation, I told Kamau and Kate that I envisioned keeping the book in our family car, pulling it for a conversation on road trips. It belongs on any shelf to which you find yourself returning.

How about simplifying all this HOW TO. Follow the Bible and just be a good person.

I love these convos. What am I doing to be antiracist? Staying woke. I LOVE that word because it makes racists reveal themselves. LOL

Are people still trying to milk the whole anti-racism paradigm? Kafka Traps are logical fallacies used to manipulate people so that no one can be innocent again. If your main focus is searching for evidence of racism in every interaction throughout the day, your confirmation bias will provide evidence to support your cognitive distortions. Books like “White Fragility” are a boil on the butt of humanity, and that cash cow is dead. It does not take intellectual prowess to control speech and actions by trying to convince white people that they are responsible for all the ills in the world. The whole premise of this debate is Orwellian in nature and does not accurately reflect the broad history of the world. Striving for a utopian society never worked in the past, and the hopes that a newer, reimagined version will bring about bliss is sophomoric and delusional. Instead of the anti-racist workbook, I recommend a workbook on Dialectical Behavior Therapy, where a person develops an internal locus of control rather than an external one.
