Vulnerable residents protected by Trading Standards

Money obtained from criminal activity has been used by Trading Standards to safeguard vulnerable residents from scams.

Callblockers have been provided to stop the targeting of those at increased risk of fraud and unsolicited calls.

Elderly and frail residents are often targeted by the fraudsters, as well as those who are previous victims of scams.

Mrs J. Wright, 91, who lives in East Wittering, was the first resident to have a callblocker installed.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for Trading Standards, said: “These callblockers will help to protect our most vulnerable residents from becoming victims of unscrupulous individuals.

“It is a great bonus that we can protect residents like Mrs Wright using money obtained from criminal activity.”

Nuisance calls can include recorded or automated messages saying you are due compensation, such as mis-sold PPI, or trying to sell unneeded items, such as double glazing.

Richard Sargeant, Trading Standards Team Manager, added: “I am very pleased that Trading Standards have used money obtained from criminal activity to reinvest into facilities that help those most vulnerable in the community.

“These devices will assist us in identifying and tackling rogue businesses who make thousands of pounds from ripping people off.”
