Be vs Do
Stephen Covey helped popularise the idea of Be, Do, Have.
In order to achieve a goal, to realise something we would like to HAVE, there are certain things that we need to DO. We can call this a "To Do" list, or an Action Plan, but we rarely achieve our desires without action, linked to an intention.
Yet people set goals and create plans and fail to reach their goals all the time. At times we lack the consistency, the drive, the focus required to reach our goal. We need to consider who we are, our "BE" to create that success.
Some of the leadership workshops I have run recently has lead me to a slightly?different take on this.
I think a lot of the ideas about leadership are conceptual. We have a mental picture of great leadership, influenced by factors including previous managers we have had, books we have read, social media and?even movies.?
Authentic Leaders are known for their ability to generate trust through their self-awareness, transparency, communication skills and their focus on people and relationships. How you would rate yourself against each of those attributes? And how would someone else rate you? Would there be a different score? Why?

There are various ways to approach the last two questions, but your self-assessment relates to your BE, how you see yourself. How other people see you is based on your actions, what you DO. If we think that we are self-aware and transparent, but others believe we are less so, that means that we aren't demonstrating those attributes. Our actions aren't consistent with our self-image. We need to DO more to show who we think we truly are. Our DO needs to match our BE.
What do you do to demonstrate that you are who you believe yourself to be?
In leadership, how do you show your communication skills? Your transparency or people focus? If you can't give examples of how you have demonstrated these important leadership attributes in the past week, perhaps you aren't the leaders you think you are??
"We are what we repeatedly do" is attributed to Aristotle. What do you repeatedly do that demonstrates your leadership?
