VRF VS MULTI-AIR HANDLER DUCTLESS

VRF VS MULTI-AIR HANDLER DUCTLESS

With VRF systems becoming more prevalent, you may consider installing them VS multiple ductless spits with up to five Air Handlers.

Before just deciding the VRF is the type of system to select consider the following. This is a topic I am incredibly familiar with. I have performed forensic engineering studies, worked on the installation team to ensure I understood the systems, designed, and estimated both types.

·?????? Piping-With a VRF there is no room for error. Although you can run the piping further out because of the branch boxes, if there is an issue it is difficult to access them. Try finding one when the ceiling -drywall has been installed.

With Ductless split you may have a limited range, however this is why I am suggesting multiple systems.

  • ?? Boards-With a VRF system you have boards in the unit and branch boxes. Compared to a ductless split you have far less boards to deal with.

?·?????? Controls. Ductless splits predominantly use a standard controller. VRF systems have a more complicated BACnet system.

  • ?? Installation costs- When I would do an estimate for a project, I would estimate the project using a VRF and multiple ductless splits. In 95% of the jobs-the number is 231 the ductless split was hands down the more cost-effective choice.
  • ??Unit Failure-If a VRF compressor or main boards fail, you end up taking out most of the area where the system is for. It takes a more experienced technician to troubleshoot and repair the systems. If one out of multiple ductless compressors or boards fail, you only lose up to five rooms.

?

I think VRF systems have their place, I personally like the use of multiple ductless splits. ?The associated costs are less expensive. The operational cost is too close to call.

This is my opinion. If anyone can provide a clear concise reason for me to change my mind, I?would love to hear it.

I admit I am only human and do make mistakes.
