VRCA’s Constructive Conversations Series Concludes with BC Conservative Leader John Rustad

In a compelling and informative conclusion to the VRCA’s election-focused Constructive Conversation series, the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) welcomed B.C. Conservative Party leader John Rustad for crucial discussion about the construction sector's most pressing issues.

During the 60-minute conversation, VRCA President Jeannine Martin addressed key challenges and opportunities within the industry, including labour shortages, the significance of skilled trades training, infrastructure investment and development, and Prompt Payment legislation. Rustad stated that, if elected this fall, he would rely on the industry to guide him in drafting relevant policy and legislation.

“When it comes to prompt payment, my approach is to turn to you,” Rustad stated. “You’ve done the research. You’ve examined other provinces and understand what would work in this province.”

When questioned about his party’s strategy to tackle the skilled labour shortage, Rustad emphasized the importance of creating a future for young people by improving affordability and expanding training opportunities to prevent them from leaving the province. He also highlighted the need to review current immigration policies, including focusing on reducing or eliminating requalification periods for newcomers.

The conversation also explored the VRCA and BC Construction Association’s (BCCA) proposal to establish a dedicated Minister of Construction to ensure that the industry’s needs are addressed at the highest levels of government. While we didn’t receive a definitive commitment, hearing Rustad express his willingness to collaborate with industry stakeholders if elected was encouraging.

“It is essential that all political leaders and candidates understand the issues that affect our members and the broader construction community,” said VRCA President Jeannine Martin. “This conversation was an opportunity to ensure that the Conservative Party leader is well-informed about our sector's priorities and that our members' voices are heard during this election period.”

“That Mr. Rustad kept his engagement given the events of yesterday is admirable,” said Chris Atchison, President of the British Columbia Construction Association. “He rightfully described the construction industry as resilient and adaptable, but make no mistake: our industry is suffering because of government inaction on issues like the enactment of Prompt Payment Legislation, Lien Reform and Adjudication. We are looking for firm commitments from candidates of all parties. These issues must be dealt with in the next legislative cycle.”
