There is no VR Picasso

I am lucky enough to have a team fully dedicated to exploring and developing Virtual and Augmented reality for TAFE NSW.
As we have been building out our production capabilities and defining our development guidelines, I came to a realisation:
There are no masterpieces in Virtual Reality.
The medium is still at the embryonic stage, no concrete rules have been defined.
We are not in the Virtual Reality Renaissance, we are all still neanderthals painting on cave walls.
The best apps and experiences which have been built are still experiments, their full realisation hampered by hardware limitations, software immaturity and rudimentary interface devices.
We need to continually push the edges of what is possible and not settle for what is easy or what will "wow" the average person who has never experienced VR.
There are already some examples of developers being lazy and building within the platforms meagre capabilities (Do we really need another zombie shooter! Or a painting app which has all the nuance of painting with a baseball bat!!).
Look at the fringe, use all the senses available to you, sounds, haptics, smell (yes, we have invested in a smell generator). Try and generate the same level of excitement you first felt when you put on a headset with everything you do.
Excellence should be the baseline... We are trying to change the world ... Mediocre won't do.

6 年Loved you epiphanical comment "we are all still neanderthals painting on cave walls." I sent? a message to Phil Wilkinson the other day asking if there was a "safe" place where ideas could be shared, explored and developed?

6 年Well then... I'm going to have to sift through my contacts, and find some people to tag -- something I suggest we ALL do. Because this is definitely the starting point of a VERY intriguing discussion.
