VR Generation N (Yes, we have done this before...)

VR Generation N (Yes, we have done this before...)

With everyone going nuts over AR/VR, I just wanted to point out, I wrote one of the first fully immersive VR games in the early 1990's, called Cybergate. I just went to a talk on Microsoft Hololens, its not bad, but seriously, its fairly incremental from what I did 22 years ago. Of course, it cost $1M+ to run my game and we had to use SGI super computers at the time.

Anyway, an interesting blast from the past. I tried finding any video of the game, can't find any, but here's an article Wired did back in 1994, if you scroll down to "Cybergate: Full Immersion" you can read a little about the game I developed back then, full HMD, head tracking, 3D sound, the works. Location/Pod based.

I haven't tried the occulus or vive, honestly I am afraid I am going to be really disappointed. There are only a handful of people on the planet that pioneered VR back in the 90's, and we really are the only ones that have SEEN what state of the art was back then and have something to compare things with. Each new generation people get another iteration of "VR" and thinVR this is AMAZING, but then it fizzles out since truthfully, its NOT amazing, and only a novelty.

But, fingers crossed I am finally going to peek at a vive and occulus and hope they don't suck :)

Well... I think Your product was born before users and computers were ready for it :) computational capabilities increment exponentionally and VR technologies would be more and more popular by the time, starting from today (era of VR began) Your experience and knowlage would be more and more demand, it is great time for You.
