VR 360o Video: A 2 day walk along the South Downs Way (in 15 minutes)
This is a 360o video: either click and drag in a web browser to look left/right/up/down - or view in the YouTube app on your phone or tablet, and move your device left/right/up/down to look around.
Last week Kate and I walked a 25 mile loop around the South Downs Way over 2 days, staying overnight at an old inn. This is a 15 minute collection of moments I filmed on the Ricoh Theta S in VR 360 video so that you can walk it with us.
It was wild and windy, and there were lots of hills and cliffs and pubs and singing. The South Downs Way is an ancient path in the south of England. Bill Bryson described this part of it as “one of the great walks of England… On a sunny day like this one, it is a world of simple, bright elements; green land, white cliffs, deep blue sea, matching sky.”
I shot about two hours of footage, which I've cut down in a first draft to 15 minutes (in Premiere). I will cut it down further, but I thought I’d post it here now as a first draft, to see how works for you in VR as a longer video, with time to look around and see the sights.
Having the Theta as a portable camera to put in my pocket, instead of the larger GoPro rig, is incredibly helpful for learning. Every time I shoot and edit something longer as a videoblog like this, I learn a lot more about what works in 360, and what doesn't - and how it differs from regular filming.
(I also made an app last week for batch processing Theta files, which was amazingly timesaving and which I'll share here.)
