This article is part of a series of articles on design thinking and deep thinking by thought leaders that transform into what we at CLC Advisors call “i.e.,” the “idea economy.” Where ideas become and transform into widgets for those who choose to dare mighty things to build something bigger than themselves. We are explorers of the universe.
This week is World Space Week (WSW) around the globe. It is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4–10. These dates commemorate two events:
- October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration.
- October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.
With the expectation and conservative estimates of the space industry projected to grow by 2040 to US$1.1 trillion and US$2.7 trillion by Morgan Stanley and Bank of America Merrill Lynch respectively, the landscape of the future of travel has exponentially shifted again. SpaceX’s Elon Musk and Gwynne Shotwell showed the world that a reusable transport Falcon 9 rocket can transport astronauts above our atmosphere in a CREW-Demo mission and then onto the International Space Station via a SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, and back. At the end of October 2020, NASA and SpaceX will launch the CREW-1 Mission bringing Astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, and Shannon Walker of NASA and Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to the International Space.
It is no longer is a moonshot in the distant future, but the necessary first steps in the commercial space industry and for the human race is to become multi-planetary. The commercial space race started and made mainstream by no other than Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic years ago in the quest to travel up to the tip of the atmosphere to bounce back into airspace, shortening the travel time between two points of destination. Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin, impressively funded by Bezos himself, is another major player in the commercial aerospace industry joining titans such as Lockheed Martin, Northup Grumman, Sierra Nevada, Airbus, ULA, Rolls Royce, and Boeing on the propulsion engine and systems side.
On a busy afternoon in September at the TWIN GLOBAL Twin Tech 2020 event in September, I had a chance to interview two movers and shakers in the private space industry. One of them was Dylan Thomas, Voyager Space Holdings’ Chairman and CEO. He joins the ranks of the modern day space titans in the private space industry bringing space travel and spaceflight exploration closer to our celestial dreams coming true.
“I would encourage people to pay attention. Space is happening whether people like it or not. In just a handful of years we will go from only 585 humans ever being to space in the history of the world to a situation where practically everyone will personally know an astronaut.” — Dylan Taylor
