Votes for Women!

Votes for Women!

It's THURSDAY and I'm a FEMINIST! And if you say it with a northern accent, we can almost make the alliteration work for ? FEMINISM FURSDAY ? so we'll go with that for today...

Today is just a reminder for all our UK ladies that we haven't always had the ability to vote. Women had to fight for our rights, risking their freedom and even their lives so that we might be afforded opportunities like we have today.

Whatever side of the political spectrum you're on, go and put an X on that piece of paper. Exercise your rights that have been hard fought for. Make our suffragette sisters proud.

We often hear about female suffrage but nobody really talks about the other side of the coin, how females came to be banned in the first place. In the beginning of the 19th century, there were calls for reform. People felt left out of democracy as only wealthy landowners could vote, there were 'rotten boroughs' plagued by corruption and at that time, only 5% of the population were even allowed to vote. Although it was rare as landowners tended to be male, women were not specifically banned from voting. "Radicals" as they were called, were outspoken in their calls for reform, this included a number of women. They would gather en masse to discuss and protest, sometimes up to 10,000 at a single gathering. This led the government at the time to ban gatherings of more than 50 people. When the "Great Reform Act" of 1832 was passed, it defined voters as "male persons" which did then ban women from voting, yet still only 5% of the population could vote. not too great. Conjecture coming: Whilst not specifically documented, I would guess this was put in place to hit the working class even harder and "punish" those who did have land but were radicals(which were most probably landowning females that did want the system fixing).
