“Vote” to protect your mental health this election season

Almost 70% of American adults say the presidential election is a significant source of stress, according to a recent survey conducted by the American Psychological Association.
This election season, vote to protect your mental health and help protect that of your loved ones. Here are a few tips to help improve your mental health over the next few days:
- Think about what brings you joy and make sure those things are readily available to you. Whether it’s music or certain activities, engage in what brings you joy on Election Day and the days after.
- Don’t feel obligated to watch the election results. You don’t have to be fully engaged as the election results start rolling in nor after they’re announced. Catch the highlights from the next day, if you want.
- If you decide to watch the election results, create a space where you feel comfortable and with people you feel comfortable around – whether virtually or safely in-person.
- After the election, plan for a Self-Care Day. Talk to your manager about taking time off on November 4. If that’s not an option, try to set a block of time on your calendar where you can take a break and step away from work. Be sure to also set an appointment with your therapist if you need it.
- Watch who you talk to and what you talk about. You aren’t going to be able to talk to everybody about the election because not everyone shares your political views. To avoid heightening your anxiety, limit your engagement in these types of conversations in spaces like group messages, social media, etc.
- Check on your family members and loved ones. This benefit is two-fold. It lets your loved ones know that they still have a solid support system and affirms the same truth for you, even in uncertain times. The conversation doesn’t have to involve politics either – find other topics to talk about.
