Vote like a mother
What a week it has been in US politics. From learning about a president that pays hundred times more for hairdos than taxes, to disturbing presidential debates, to a super spreader event at the White House, how do we maintain mental sanity while suffering nonstop anguish and heartache?
Of course we should be concerned about the health and safety of the president and the first lady, as well as the millions suffering from the covid-19 crisis and the human and economic losses it brings. And we should demand transparent and trustworthy information as to the health and fitness of the president to serve.
We are in a historic election already, perhaps the most consequential one in our lifetimes. Before Covid-19 hit the president and his many advisors, we had plenty of reasons to be concerned about his fitness to serve. This president has failed at providing the leadership this pandemic called for. He has encouraged hate and violence and he has told us that he will not support a peaceful transfer of power when he loses. He repeatedly and consistently role models behaviors that no parent wants their children to adopt, this alone makes me feel he is too sick to serve.
Voting is both a right and a responsibility.
No matter how we feel, we must vote and by that exercise a hard-earned right that people actually died for us to have. Who are we to choose not to embrace that responsibility, no matter how sick we may feel about the state of politics and the world. For me, this election is not about voting Red or Blue, it is about voting Red, White and Blue. It is about accepting our responsibility for restoring stability, sanity and morality to the Oval Office. It is about the US reentering the global stage and working together with others to tackle this pandemic as well as the multiple global crises now facing humanity.
It is about changing who is in leadership in order to change how leadership will meet the most challenging moment in modern history.
I ask you, no matter your politics, to think hard about our accountability towards the next generation. What kind of a role model do we want for our children and grandchildren? Who do we trust best with their health, safety and education. I ask you to vote like a mother, to vote with your values, to vote like our democracy depends upon it. Because it does.
