Vote Harris for Tourism Growth

Vote Harris for Tourism Growth

The 2024 United States presidential election, scheduled for next Tuesday, features Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican nominee former President Donald Trump. Both candidates present distinct policy platforms that are expected to impact various sectors differently, including tourism.?

Kamala Harris’s Policy Platform and Potential Impact on Tourism?

Vice President Harris’s campaign focuses on supporting the middle class by reducing the cost of living, increasing wages, and promoting affordable healthcare and education. By aiming to increase the disposable income of middle-class families, Harris's policies could encourage greater domestic travel, as middle-income earners often make up a significant portion of the tourism market. If successful, this could lead to a surge in leisure travel within the U.S., boosting tourism across various destinations.

Additionally, Harris’s platform builds on the infrastructure improvements initiated under the Biden administration’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure law, designed to modernize roads, bridges, public transit, and airports. These enhancements are expected to improve the overall travel experience, making it easier and more appealing for both domestic and international tourists to explore the U.S. Furthermore, her focus on sustainability and diversity could attract a broader range of international visitors, especially those interested in eco-friendly and culturally inclusive experiences.?

Donald Trump’s Policy Platform and Potential Impact on Tourism

Former President Trump’s campaign centers on economic growth through tax cuts, deregulation, and a strong emphasis on national security. His proposed tax cuts, however, primarily benefit the wealthy and corporations. While this approach may lead to increased investment in some business sectors, it is less likely to significantly increase middle-class disposable income, which is a critical driver of domestic travel demand. In contrast to Harris’s middle-class-oriented economic plans, Trump’s policies will have a limited impact on expanding the size of the travel industry, as higher-income earners typically have a lower marginal propensity to spend on domestic leisure travel.

Moreover, Trump’s record on infrastructure development is minimal, with no significant infrastructure legislation passed during his previous term despite announcements to that effect. This lack of commitment to infrastructure could limit improvements to U.S. transportation systems, potentially affecting the quality of travel experiences within the country. His campaign’s emphasis on stricter immigration policies and travel restrictions could deter international visitors, particularly from countries subject to stringent measures, further limiting growth in international tourism.?

Who's Best for Tourism

The candidates’ economic strategies offer clear distinctions for the tourism sector. Harris’s focus on increasing middle-class disposable income, coupled with infrastructure improvements, could lead to more robust domestic travel, benefiting local economies and attractions. Her emphasis on sustainability and inclusivity could also attract more diverse international visitors.?

In contrast, Trump's proposed tax cuts for the wealthy and limited infrastructure investment are unlikely to drive substantial growth in domestic tourism. His strict immigration policies may further hinder international arrivals, which could restrict overall tourism growth.

The election’s outcome will play a critical role in shaping the U.S. tourism industry, influencing both international perceptions and domestic travel behaviors.? The choice is clear, Harris is better for the tourism industry.

hi Rick, Thanks for this great piece of advocacy for Harris and tourism. ?? I was at the Ellipse rally last night - along with 75,000 or so others. ?? In addition to her strong economic messages, my other "take-aways" were her messages of unity, of bringing diverse groups together and reaching consensus peacefully. Travel and tourism help accomplish, of course, within the US and with other people around the world. Our buddies Imtiaz Muqbil, Geoffrey Lipman, and I recently reminisced in other postings about this power for overcoming conflict, bringing adversaries together and being a peace dividend in the Middle East. While this may be a dream to recover for the future in the Middle East, here in the US, both the economic and people power of travel and tourism are alive and well and will flourish in a Harris administration.
