For many entrepreneurs and small businesses, social media can be an absolute game-changer! All it takes is one viral post and a business can suddenly take off.??

At Like A Voss Social Media, we’re highlighting Voss Babe entrepreneurs who are killing online and in life. This week’s spotlight is on the owner of Makeup by Kyra - Kyra Dye!?

Makeup By Kyra is… a one woman makeup show. Kyra’s love of makeup runs deep - as she works full-time as a makeup artist for a retail store by day, and runs her business doing makeup during her off hours. Kyra’s goal is to make my clients feel their most incredible!?

Our CEO Mandi Relyea-Voss interviewed Kyra, owner of Makeup By Kyra about her journey as an entrepreneur, what she’s learning, and why she’s a badass Voss Babe. Mandi also got some awesome insights into why she thinks social media is an effective tool in business, since you know - we’re a social media marketing company.?

A Little Bit About Being a Female Entrepreneur

How long have you been in business for??

Kyra: It’s been 5 years, holy crap it’s been that long? Took me a second to think about it, but yes. 5 YEARS!! It’s amazing how quickly time flies when you’re having fun - and I am not just saying that, I really love what I do.

What advice would you give to other businesses and entrepreneurs who want to use social media as a way to connect with customers?

Kyra: Be yourself, don’t try to sugarcoat it, be up front and honest. I find it makes you more relatable, there’s something to be said about seeing someone real on social media. Clients love to connect with someone they can relate to. That is one way that I have made some really great connections on social (and in life). I think there has been a big shift over the past 5 years in what people want to see, it went from “polished and perfect” to “real and raw”...so, if you just start by being yourself, and always be yourself, you’ll do great.

?

What made you decide to break away from the 9-5 and start your own business as a makeup artist?

Kyra: I’m actually doing both right now, I’m working full time as a makeup artist at a retail store, and I’m running my business as a freelance makeup artist on the side. It’s nice to have the break, and work WITH someone, instead of FOR someone.

What do you love most about being a female entrepreneur??

The company. And by that I mean, the other amazing women that I am ‘in company’ with as a business owner. There are so many badass women who are doing things for themselves, and it’s an honor to be one of them.?

What is the hardest thing you have had to overcome as an entrepreneur? Something you did not foresee when you decided to start your own business?

For me, with the full-time job AND the business it’s about how much work you truly have to put in it. It’s 14 hour days, it’s long drives, overthinking everything, wondering if you’re doing enough, forgetting to take time for yourself. I am sure lots of other female business owners can relate to this.

And Now Onto The Social Media Questions!

Do you have a favorite social media platform??

Instagram! 100%. That’s how we connected girl, LOL, and how you asked me to be part of this. (Okay Kyra, touche. ^MRV)

What made you decide to start using social media as a way to promote your company??

I’m one of those… whispers millennials…we are the generations who live their lives on social media. In all honesty, it is the easiest way to reach the largest amount of people. Plus, you never know who you are going to meet and click with. I LOVE having my “insta friends” who are honestly some of my biggest supporters - but who I have not actually met IRL yet. I say yet because I want to meet them all, some day...when the opportunity presents itself.

How has social media impacted your business? Would you say that it’s an effective marketing tool?

Oh yeah! Social media has been essential to starting and growing my business, especially Instagram and Facebook. Social media allows me to check out other artist’s work, and take inspiration; while allowing me to get in touch with new collaborators, and clients. Let’s not mention the easy way to showcase me work to potential clients, because, in the makeup industry you HAVE to SHOW what you can do.

What tips would you give other female entrepreneurs on how to be a Voss Babe on their social media channels?

Follow people that inspire you, whether is be other Voss babes, or amazing artists, those people are the ones that will help you grow. And post post post!?

Any juicy insights from the work of makeup artistry that you want to share with us?

It’s not glamorous! I know it seems like it should be the most fancy, glamorous job, but the truth is, it’s early mornings, and long days, it’s a fast pace, it’s physical labor, its dirty, and messy, and wonderful. It’s also the most fun a person can have while calling it work.

A Little More About Kyra

Kyra actually started working in health care, taking care of the elderly, and doing makeup as a hobby. She eventually decided to follow her calling and started working towards what she wanted to do - be a makeup artist.?

Her biggest piece of advice to anyone reading this is to find something you’re passionate about, and give it your all. If I can do it, anyone can. Just follow your passion, whatever it might be.
