Volvo XC range stealing the show with 3 wins.

With electric cars now coming in all shapes and sizes – and available to suit every budget. #WhatCarMagazine has named what they think are the best models in every class. Volvo has snatched up three of those categories.

Best Small Hybrid SUV – Volvo XC40 T4 Recharge T4 Plus

What Car reckon the #Volvo #xc40 is more convincing in this down-to-earth plug-in hybrid guise than as a fully electric car. Its position secured by no rival can beat its sheer all-around ability at the price.

The T4’s range should be more than enough for local journeys and school runs, too. And let’s not forget it can be recharged in three hours from fully flat when you use a dedicated home wall box. Keep it fully charged and you can pretty much treat it as an electric vehicle if short trips are the mainstay of your motoring using the 28-mile official battery (#WhatCar got 21 miles in their real-world test).

But unlike an EV, you have the backup on longer journeys of a 1.5-liter petrol engine, and that is impressively economical; they managed more than 45mpg when the battery was flat. And on these longer trips, you get to appreciate some of the #XC40’s finer qualities, from its spacious and comfortable interior to its well-finished dashboard and its extremely well-thought-out storage options. What’s more, the T4’s boot doesn’t lose any volume compared with that of the regular #xc40 ; that often isn’t the case with plug-in hybrids.

Its performance won’t leave you disappointed, either. It’ll turn in a 0-62mph sprint of 8.5sec, and its automatic gearbox responds quickly when you need it to.

Best used hybrid large SUV – Volvo XC60 Recharge T8

The #volvo #XC60 T8 is your cool, calm and collected relative who, when provoked can unexpectedly rip you a new one. That’s right this large SUV’s conservative exterior hides some serious power: 401bhp in total.

its grunt comes from a 2.0-liter petrol engine (which is both turbocharged and supercharged) and an electric motor. The T8 has a 0-62mph time of 5.1sec – not bad for a two-tonne-plus SUV.

The fuel economy is far from poor, either, because the T8 averages 134.5mpg officially. Of course, use all of the available performance and it won’t return anywhere near that, but running costs remain reasonable. CO2 emissions are relatively low as well, at just 56g/km.

What isn’t pared down is the T8’s level of equipment. Even entry-level Inscription trim gets climate control, keyless start, cruise control, heated leather seats, and automatic lights and wipers. The other option is R-Design, which is generally cheaper to buy used and has sportier styling, bigger wheels, and tinted windows. You also get sports suspension for a slightly firmer ride, but it brings tidier handling too.

True to Volvo form, the #XC60 is an impressively practical SUV, with plenty of passenger space front and rear, plus a boot that’s a good size and shape.

It also has some of the most advanced safety features in the class; it scored the maximum five stars in?Euro NCAP’s safety tests, coming away with a brilliant 98% adult occupant protection score and 95% for safety assistance.
