Volunteers reinforce World Environment Day celebration on the coast
Learning about plastic pollution is one thing. Teaming together to help clean it up is another.
To extend the cause of the IEC campaign held during World Environment Day, South Luzon Thermal Energy Corporation (SLTEC) conducted a coastal clean-up with its eighteen (18) volunteer employees, together with the twenty-four (24) representatives of its partner People’s Organization (PO), held at Bumbon Island in Barangay Talisay, Calatagan, Batangas on June 6.
Before the actual clean-up, the volunteers had the chance to learn about mangroves and the importance of their conservation through the talk delivered by the Corporate Sustainability Department. For first-hand experience, they had an immersion in the mangrove nursery of the PO, which at the same time takes care of SLTEC’s adopted mangrove area in the barangay. The Environment Department then gave a refresher to the participants about plastic pollution awareness, emphasizing the celebration’s theme which is to #BeatThePlasticPollution.
Moving to the activity, the volunteers took a boat ride to reach the place and clean the coasts of Bumbon Island. Gloves, scissors, and bunches of sacks were the tools used by the group in clearing the plastics and other waste materials sticking to the mangroves and the area, which made the volunteers’ hour-long venture more impactful.
Through this collaboration, SLTEC was also able to forward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 13 Life on Land, SDG 14 Life Below Water, and SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals. The SDGs are the United Nations’ (UN) blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all, which are always part of the company’s community efforts in keeping the lights on.?
