Volunteering at the Library & the Mayor's Visit

This week, something amazing happened: the Mayor of Richmond Hill visited our volunteer program!

It’s not every day that a mayor drops.

That’s exactly what happened this week - a visit from Mayor David West,

I’d love to share this memorable day with you!

Why Do I Volunteer at the Library?

- I crave more face-to-face interaction.

- I also give back to my community..

- I’m passionate about helping newcomers.

- I love coaching English.

How Do Newcomers Benefit:

- English conversation

- daily language skills

- cultural knowledge

A few months ago, I received the Mayor’s monthly newsletter.

I replied about the work we’re doing at the library.

To my surprise, they responded, saying he wanted to see it for himself!

Fast forward to this week—he came!

Mayor David West with Roz

The Mayor joined us and participated in all three of our conversation groups.

He listened, asked thoughtful questions, and shared his encouraging words.

He was down-to-earth, relaxed, and engaged.

His style was totally Canadian—friendly, approachable, and open.

It felt like we were just chatting with a neighbor, not the person in charge of our city.

It was rewarding and the Mayor’s visit was a reminder of how important it is to support each other.

It was a wonderful experience I’ll remember for a long time!

Have you ever done some community volunteering?

I'd love to hear in the comments below! ??

Great coverage of one of those moments you don't want to forget. And it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't taken the initiative to invite him. Well done!

Roz Weitzman, thanks. I'll see which Tuesday I can make it! This season is busier than usual ... but I'm sure I can

This is great! I need to find a volunteer in-person opportunity like this! Maybe I can join you in Richmond Hill?? That way I may also be able to earn enough professional development hours to continue to renew my LINC Instructor certificate!! which will expire otherwise! But most importantly I miss my interaction with adult learners of English.

This is such an inspiring read, Roz! Great to see you making such a meaningful impact on your community while sharing your passion for teaching. It really shines through in this article. The Mayor’s visit must have been such a special moment, and I can tell how much it meant to everyone involved. As for your question about volunteering... does cat-sitting for my cousin count? The cats don’t talk much, but I think I’m making progress! ??
