Last week's parcel power plays

Every Monday we’re catching you up on the top industry news stories from the previous week. Let’s get into it:

#1 USPS Aiming for Costly Changes to Partnerships

The USPS is pushing for a new deal with partners who use their Parcel Select service, hoping to eliminate discounts based on where shipments are injected in to the USPS’ network. This could impact a number of postal consolidators, such as Pitney Bowes and DHL eCommerce.

Currently, Parcel Select involves a carrier moving shipments primarily through their own network, then handing it off to the USPS for final-mile delivery. The USPS’ aims to amend these agreements to incentivize partners to inject packages into their network further upstream. This would likely raise prices and lead to delays for clients of these carriers.

The initiative was communicated to the carriers in a March 27 letter, and outlined hopes to amend the contracts within 45 days. If that deadline is met, these contracts would be changed within the month of May. However, the USPS has said they’ll be flexible with postal consolidators, offering a transition period as the changes are implemented.

#2 FedEx Follows UPS, Raises Fuel Surcharge

FedEx is following UPS & increasing the fuel surcharge for U.S. Ground & Express. The increase goes into effect Monday (5/6).

The surcharges vary based on an index of national diesel averages released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.?

For the lowest range of $3.37 - $3.46, FedEx Ground’s Fuel Surcharge is being raised from 14% to 15%?

Like UPS, this comes after a recent increase to the Fuel Surcharge in December.
