At the recent CES 2024 in Las Vegas, Volkswagen has taken a groundbreaking step in automotive technology by integrating ChatGPT into their vehicles.
This innovative move, announced by Thomas Sch?fer, a Board Member at Volkswagen Group, positions Volkswagen as the first volume manufacturer to embed an AI-based chatbot in a wide range of its production vehicles. As someone who's previously worked in the automotive industry, with a passion for Gen-AI, this tech-forward move is particularly exciting!
Integration with Volkswagen's IDA Voice Assistant
The integration of ChatGPT with Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant is a significant leap in making cars more interactive and intelligent. Scheduled to be a feature from the second quarter of 2024 in many Volkswagen models including the electric ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, Passat, and the new Golf, the technology promises to enhance the driving experience significantly.
Sch?fer, in his LinkedIn post, expressed enthusiasm about this advancement, stating, “We’ll be the first volume manufacturer to offer the artificial-intelligence-based chatbot as a feature [...] A huge step for Volkswagen that underlines the innovative strength of our new products.”
Capabilities and Features
Volkswagen’s integration of ChatGPT goes beyond basic voice commands. From adjusting in-car settings like heating and air conditioning to providing assistance in locating the nearest Italian restaurant, the system offers a hands-free control of car functions along with the ability to have “enriching conversations” while driving.
Presented at the CES electronics trade fair in Las Vegas, this feature represents a significant enhancement over current voice assistant capabilities in vehicles. It positions Volkswagen at the forefront of incorporating generative AI as a standard feature in compact cars, ahead of other major players like Mercedes-Benz and General Motors, who are currently running tests in this domain.

Rollout and Availability
The integration of ChatGPT will first be rolled out in Europe in the second quarter of this year. It is expected to be available in new Volkswagen models, covering a wide range including the electric ID line, the Passat, the Golf, and the Tiguan SUVs.
Implications for the Future of Automotive Technology
Volkswagen's move to integrate ChatGPT into its vehicles is more than just an upgrade to existing technology. It's a step into the future, where cars are not just modes of transportation but intelligent companions capable of assisting with a wide array of tasks and providing informational and entertainment value during journeys.
Volkswagen’s announcement at CES 2024 marks a significant milestone in the integration of artificial intelligence into everyday life. Having used voice control in a number of vehicles myself, honestly being underwhelmed every time, this is a genuinely exciting innovation from my point of view. Even using Siri / Google (with Apple or Android CarPlay) and Alexa in the car can become woefully tiresome, but this feels like it could up the ante.
As the first volume manufacturer to adopt this technology, Volkswagen sets a precedent in the automotive industry, showcasing the potential of AI to transform the driving experience and make it more interactive, convenient, and enjoyable.
