Volkswagen has commenced production of the new generation Jetta at its Cuautlancingo plant in Puebla, Mexico. The new model will cater to both the domestic market and the broader North American region.
“Starting the production of the new Jetta is a momentous occasion for us. This vehicle, produced by Mexican hands despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, will be a significant part of our offerings in North America,” said Holger Nestler, President and CEO, Volkswagen Mexico. Nestler highlighted that the new Jetta will strengthen Volkswagen’s manufacturing presence in the region, with two of the vehicle’s engines being assembled at the company’s plant in Silao, Guanajuato.
Volkswagen’s Jetta has been a staple of the Cuautlancingo plant, which has produced over 6 million vehicles, making the Jetta the most manufactured model at the facility. In the first half of 2024 alone, 64,071 units were produced, reflecting a 59.7% increase compared to the 40,111 units manufactured in the same period of 2023, according to data from INEGI.
Carlos Henry, Director, Volkswagen Mexico, noted the enduring popularity of the Jetta. “Since its debut in the Mexican market in 1981, the Jetta has not only been one of our best-selling cars but also a reference point in the country's automotive industry,” Henry stated. He added that the Jetta has evolved significantly over the years, becoming larger, more luxurious, and more capable while maintaining its reputation for quality, safety, and driving enjoyment.
Volkswagen’s overall production in the first half of 2024 reached 202,194 units, including the Jetta, Taos, and Tiguan models, representing a 29.9 percent annual growth. Export figures also saw a notable increase, with 165,189 units shipped, a 41.5 percent rise.
