#FunFact: Pod·cast - "a digital audio file made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically."
YouTube had 1 Billion Podcast Listeners in January 2025?!?
Ah yes, the latest round of "Let's redefine what a podcast is so we can pump up some vanity numbers!" YouTube supposedly had 1 billion podcast listeners in January 2025?
Cute.
Listen, I get that Google failed miserably with Google Podcasts and is trying to hang tough in the podcast world, but allow me to help you better understand...
Here’s why that’s a steaming pile of ridiculous nonsense:
1. A YouTube "view" is counted after just 30 seconds. That’s it.
So congrats if someone accidentally watched 31 seconds of a random clip from a podcast channel before clicking away.
According to this metric, they’re now a podcast listener.
2. FYI…a "video podcast" is not a thing.
To clarify—by definition, a podcast is an audio file uploaded to the internet to be listened to.
Not watched.
Not streamed on YouTube.
Not cut up into TikTok clips.
LISTENED. TO. (like with your ears)
3. Video recordings of podcasts are NOT podcasts.
That would be VIDEO CONTENT based on a podcast.
You can record yourself talking into a mic all you want, but if your audience has to watch you, that’s called a show, not a podcast.
This YouTube stat is nothing but a bloated vanity play designed to blur the lines between "actual podcasting" and "anything remotely related to a spoken-word video."
Don’t buy into the hype.
You don’t need to be on YouTube to have a successful podcast.
Many people are sooooo caught up in the idea that they MUST be on YouTube if they’re going to have a podcast, yet they haven’t even pressed record on episode 1.
After spending the last decade helping people launch their podcast, one thing has remained the priority and that this…
You need a solid audio-first strategy and, more importantly, listeners who actually care about what you have to say—not just 30-second drive-by’s inflating a platform’s marketing numbers.
Keep podcasting.
Leave the fluff to the YouTube clickbait crowd.
