The Power of Inner Voices
Recently, I had an enlightening coaching session with my dear coach. We discussed the concept of inner voices, reminiscent of the classic devil and angel on the shoulders, as seen in classic cartoons. This analogy sparked a thought-provoking question:
"Which one do I choose to listen to?"

This discussion led me to reflect on the work of Ethan Kross , particularly his book "Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It." While I haven't read the book yet, it's on my must-read list. Kross delves into the darker side of our inner voice, termed 'chatter,' which can lead us into negative cycles of worry and rumination.
Kross explains that our inner voice is part of our 'Verbal Working Memory System,' vital for problem-solving, planning, self-control, and shaping our identity. However, when it becomes chatter, it can be overwhelming, straining relationships, and impacting our physical health.
One fascinating strategy Kross suggests is the use of rituals to manage inner chatter. These rituals help create a sense of order and control, countering the chaos brought on by our thoughts. For instance, Rafael Nadal's rituals during tennis matches exemplify this practice.
The key takeaway from Kross's work is the uniqueness of managing our inner dialogues. There's no one-size-fits-all solution; rather, it's about discovering what works best for each individual. Experiencing chatter is not a weakness but a part of the human condition.
In our daily lives, recognizing the voice of doubt and consciously choosing to listen to the voice of encouragement is essential.
I'd love to hear about your experiences with your inner dialogues. How do you balance your 'little devil' and 'little angel'? Please share your stories with us in the comments below, and let's continue this fascinating conversation.
