November Edition: Women in STEM

? Welcome to Voices of Impact, a series dedicated to spotlighting individuals who inspire us with their strength, determination, and trailblazing contributions. This month, we’re celebrating Women in STEM, honoring the innovative and transformative work of women shaping the future through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

We’re thrilled to feature Véronique Couttee-Jenkins, a GIS and equity specialist whose remarkable journey exemplifies resilience, vision, and leadership.

Meet Véronique Couttee-Jenkins: GIS and Equity Specialist

With over a decade of experience in the non-profit sector and a Master’s in Biodiversity, Conservation, and Policy as a Fulbright scholar, Véronique leverages geospatial technology to drive global conservation and equity initiatives. She is the founder of Geospatial Equity Tech (GET), a consultancy that integrates storytelling, EDI-B expertise, and science to enhance outcomes for diverse projects.

Her contributions have not gone unnoticed: she received the 2023 Women in Tech Advocate Award and serves on the boards of Amplify the Future, Key Conservation, and RekoneKT. Through her AfriTech Fellowship, Véronique has trained and empowered 20 African women leaders in STEAM, helping them develop leadership and technical skills in six-month cohorts.

The Spark: A Childhood Filled with Science and Curiosity

Véronique’s journey began in her childhood home in Mauritius, where her father’s love of science and technology shaped her path. From poring over science magazines to walking along the beaches of Flic en Flac and exploring rock pools and shorelines, these early experiences instilled a deep curiosity about the natural world.

Her father never dictated her career path but gave her the tools and inspiration to dream big. She fondly recalls a treasured human anatomy encyclopedia that she read cover to cover, which opened her mind to the wonders of science.

From Conservationist to GIS Trailblazer

Véronique’s path into STEM wasn’t straightforward. Initially aspiring to become a veterinarian, she instead earned a bachelor’s in biology and worked on wildlife conservation projects, including restoring endangered bird species in Mauritius and Seychelles. However, a thirst for deeper knowledge led her to apply for scholarships tirelessly for six years.

In 2018, while working in the breathtaking Coco de Mer Valley, she received the life-changing news of being awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the U.S. Despite the challenges of living abroad, she earned her Master’s degree and developed a specialization in geospatial technology, which has since become the cornerstone of her career.

Returning to Mauritius after her studies, she faced unemployment but turned it into an opportunity to start her consultancy and launch initiatives like the AfriTech Fellowship.

Breaking Barriers and Building Community

As a woman of color in predominantly white spaces, Véronique faced discrimination, under-representation, and a lack of mentorship. These challenges only fuelled her resolve to create opportunities for others.

Through the AfriTech Fellowship, she has built a nurturing and empowering community for women in STEM.

"Weaving a supportive network has been transformative," Véronique shares. "It allowed me to thrive and offer the same support to others."

Her mission is clear: to break systemic biases and champion a diverse and inclusive geospatial field where women, especially from under-represented backgrounds, can excel.

Words of Wisdom: Advice for Aspiring STEM Professionals

  • Find Your Tribe: Seek safe spaces where you can connect with people who understand your experiences. Build relationships based on shared values—they’ll provide the support you need to thrive.
  • Prioritize Mental Health: STEM careers can be demanding, especially in male-dominated environments. Self-care is essential. Yoga, therapy, and spending time with loved ones have been vital to my well-being.
  • Embrace Your Journey: Your path is unique, and your individuality is your strength. Lean into your curiosity, and never stop learning.
