In an exciting?week for the African Academy of Artificial Intelligence, Quinton Jacobs and I had the privilege to present at Takealot's inaugural Marketplace conference. We also spearheaded an AI Masterclass for Zimbabwean leaders, where Monisha Prem Prem brilliantly discussed Governance, Risk & Compliance along with Quinton's AI Mastery session. Thanks go out to Jeff Phiri?for making it happen.

Concluding the week, I participated in the ITWeb CX Conference panel, discussing ChatGPT, AI, and key topics like the digital divide and IP protection. A heartfelt thanks to Nomvuyo Tena for the opportunity.

ChatGPT Voice Will Be a Game Changer in Africa ?

Within the African AI landscape, ChatGPT Voice Chat emerges as a significant and inclusive innovation. Considering that for many, speaking and listening are more intuitive and prevalent than reading and typing, traditional smartphone interactions can inadvertently sideline a vast segment of the global community. This is particularly notable in lower and middle-income nations. Linguistic diversity remains a challenge, however. While it's impractical for ChatGPT to accommodate all 2000 African languages, focusing on major local languages such as KiSwahili in East Africa, Yoruba and Igbo in Nigeria, and IsiZulu and isiXhosa in South Africa is certainly viable.?

Back to?tech giants, Amazon recently invested heavily in Anthropic, the firm behind LLM Claude 2, on a $4bn valuation. Consequently, we see alliances like Microsoft-OpenAI, Amazon-Claude, Google-Google, and Meta/Facebook-Llama. Each company has its core expertise—Google in search, Amazon in e-commerce, Microsoft in gaming, and Meta in social media. The hope is for a less monopolistic tech future, but I’m not optimistic.

One exciting application of generative AI is in the fast food drive-thru.?This video?showcases multiple AI integrations in the drive-thru?setting, including NLP text-to-voice and vice versa, ChatGPT as the foundational language model, incorporation of internal data like menus, AI exhibiting human-like behaviors, and importantly, the fact that AI doesn't replace employees. The video evaluates the AI based on three criteria, and the results are commendable.
