Vocalizing Social Impact Work
“Most firms just aren’t talking about the social impact work they’re doing. But they’re still doing it.”
We've have heard variations of this comment in several conversations with colleagues. Our response: Sorry, that’s not gonna cut it.
Here’s why:
1. It’s easy to claim to be working on systemic change but if there’s no data and no information sharing, there’s no transparency and accountability.
2. The void that silence creates feeds the systemic iniquities and social vulnerabilities that corporate leadership should be committed to eradicating.
3. Why exactly is everyone scared to talk about social responsibility? How did we get to a place where leadership is scared to talk about environmental initiatives, equal opportunity programs, and ethical governance? There’s no answer to this question that justifies scuttling or hiding social impact work.
It’s not going to go unnoticed. The response just might be as muted as the withdrawal: BD losses, quiet quitting, drop in applications. When the economy recovers, people will choose to go elsewhere.
Things aren’t going to get better until business leadership develops a commitment to ethical leadership and social responsibility. There’s a million ways to contribute to a better world but it starts there.
