Vocabulary Learning using AI / ML

Background

Vocabulary learning and proficiency is an important part of any preparation effort for and performance in tests like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, OET, GMAT, GRE, SAT, etc. However, the tools available to students remain inadequate –

1.       Most digital solutions rely on very basic flash cards approach

2.      The preparatory programs available also do not provide any significant personalized learning path

3.      A key point that is missed is that a learner does not remember the word by just learning it once. She has to revise it a few times and there is no way of knowing how many times.

Liqvid’s Solution addresses this in the following way –

1.      It uses an established learning theory – Herman Ebbinghaus created psychology’s first retention curve in the late 19th and early 20th century. One of his key finding was that the rate of forgetting is very fast initially following a learning experience and very slow thereafter.

2.      AI / ML alogorithm – The solution is implemented through an regression based AI algorithm that calculated the half-life of the forgetting curve of each word, so that learners can be served that word just as they are about to forget it.

3.      A personalized learning path – learners can personalize their learning path based on their constraints – how many days to the exam – and preferences – time available to study on a weekday / weekends.

Simple and Effective for the Learner

1.      User can choose the exam they want to study for - IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, OET, SAT, etc

2.      They then provide their learning preferences in terms of the total time they have and how much time they are able to devote in a day – they can choose different times for weekends and weekdays

3.      Then the system generates a personalized learning path for them. They are served a set of words and then they are asked multiple questions on each word. Then the word is served to them again based on their performance on these questions as well as the half-life of the word.

This system provided a cutting edge, personalized approach that helps learners learn their vocabulary in a highly interactive and effective way. Truly, an learning approach that learns from the learner.

Congratulations Vivek
