VMware Explore 2023: Charting the Future of Digital Transformation
Neil C. Hughes
Technology Writer, Podcast Host, and Producer of Tech Talks Daily and LinkedIn Top Voice. Always a student. Sometimes a teacher. Never an expert.
I recently attended VMware Explore 2023 and was able to engage with critical figures reshaping the digital landscape. This newsletter is complemented by embedded podcast interviews from my Tech Talks Daily Podcast to offer you a comprehensive overview of the event's highlights and critical discussions recorded on the show floor.
The Scottish Government's Tech Revolution
I sat down with Neill Smith , head of infrastructure at the Scottish government's Agricultural Economy Directorate. Smith's discussion highlighted the Scottish government's progressive approach to digital transformation, blending VMware infrastructure with modern technologies like Kubernetes and AWS. This strategic integration reflects a shift towards agile and collaborative environments, which are crucial for delivering exceptional service to citizens.
Smith emphasized the need for a nuanced cloud migration strategy, challenging the 'cloud-first' mindset and advocating for solutions tailored to specific requirements. He also addressed the pressing issue of the cloud skills gap, highlighting the importance of nurturing a learning culture in the tech domain.
Bridging the Multi-Cloud Divide: Andy Corcoran's Perspective
Andy Corcoran , UK&I Channel Sales Director at VMware also shared his passionate views on leveraging technology for positive business outcomes with me. Our conversation delved into VMware's multi-cloud innovation approach and the significance of its partner program in aligning with the evolving needs of both partners and customers.
Corcoran highlighted VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and its growing appeal for enhancing business operations. He also discussed data sovereignty and VMware Sovereign Cloud's role in ensuring this is crucial, as well as the challenges and opportunities of integrating Private AI in compliance with privacy and data protection laws.
Diversity and Skills Gap
The discussions at VMware Explore brought to the fore the importance of diversity in technology and the need to bridge the skills gap. There is a much-needed emphasis on diversity, especially in AI development to reduce unintentional biases and ensure that technology development is inclusive. The cloud skills gap, a recurring theme, highlights the industry's focus on creating environments conducive to learning and growth.
It was also refreshing to hear how Holly Morgan, comedian and host of Big Diva Energy, uses AI to create the basis of each podcast episode. She sees AI as a tool to help her improve her time management so that in turn she may spend more time on the things that matter. For Holly, AI is a tool that should be used to enable creativity instead of trying to replace it.
