VMware & AWS join forces to provide a true hybrid cloud experience

The Cloud Wars between the 2 giants is over.

?Amazon Web Services (AWS) and VMware announced a partnership to deliver a vSphere-based cloud service, which will run in Amazon's cloud. This service is called “VMware Cloud on AWS," and will bring VMware's enterprise-class software-defined datacenter (SDDC) software to the AWS cloud and an integrated, easy to manage, hybrid cloud environment.

What does this mean in terms of cost savings? The same VMware software that is used to manage the private on-premise cloud will also be used to manage the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure running in the public cloud. This new offering will allow customers to leverage their existing investments in VMware skillsets and tooling to quickly and seamlessly take advantage of the flexibility and economics of the AWS Cloud.

What software are we talking about? Software like vSphere, VSAN and NSX will soon run on AWS. The service is currently in its technology preview phase and an invite-only beta will start in early 2017.

Who will provide and support this service? This service will be operated, sold and supported by VMware (Not AWS). The client will finally get the best of both worlds (private and public).

Who will lose from this deal? IBM, Google, Azure and other cloud providers.
