The fishbowl method for employee stories

Insight from Emma Lang at Haleon.

One of the newest additions to our customer community is Haleon . And with Haleon, the wonderful Emma Lang.

Emma recently shared one of the simplest methods we’ve heard yet: “How to create a safe space for your people to tell their stories, without the pressure, which is the easiest way to demotivate them.”???

It’s called the Fishbowl method and it goes like this:

  • Ask your chosen employee or ambassador for 15 minutes of their time ?
  • Set up a phone on a tripod, and press record
  • Put a (literal) fishbowl of written questions in front of them
  • No scripts, no breaks on recording between questions
  • A single 15-minute take then gets edited into multiple pieces of content (including a blooper reel)

??Key Tip: It helps when it’s someone who's experienced with presenting, passionate, or perhaps they have just completed a project or their probation and have some great experiences to share.?

And in Emma's words:

"I just buy them a coffee, hit record, and let them pick out questions from the fish bowl.?

They can skip the ones they don’t want to do, but answer the questions that resonate with them.

This way, they are not over-prepared and will talk more authentically. It’s ok if they take a few minutes to think through their answer.

When I capture a good 5 to 10 minutes worth of filmed content - I can get as many as five, six, perhaps even, seven short videos as an output, which has been great.?

It multiplies our output very quickly."?

P.S. If you need to get employee videos like this from people you simply can’t be in the room with, VideoMyJob has got that covered with our Campaign Management solution.

What is the power of the play button?

Insight from Maggie Partsi at Transurban.

It’s rare these days that the value and potential of video content is in debate for Employer Brands working to tell their story in a way that connects with talent, and how they want to engage.

But - sometimes, someone just comes along, and in a moment of brilliance, puts things into a clear perspective.

And this time that’s Maggi Partsi with this take:

"The play button is one of the most compelling call-to-actions on the internet."

?? Key Tip: When it comes to audience engagement, video wears the crown and this extends to job ads, social posts, career sites, and that new EVP you’re launching.
