VMI Turnouts - March 2025
The VMI Alumni Association
Dedicated to a Commitment to Service Beyond Barracks.
In this Turnouts, see photos from the VMI Legislative Reception held in Richmond recently, meet an alumna whose affinity for VMI has impacted both her personal and professional life, and learn how a 2003 alum began competitive skiing in his 40s with his family.
Save the Date for Compete to Win
Compete to Win is coming! To be held March 25–27, this fourth annual fundraiser for VMI athletics allows donors to enhance the cadet-athlete experience by contributing to a specific team or the Athletic Director’s Discretionary Fund. Your support will provide cadet-athletes with the resources they need to compete to win.
VMI Legislative Reception
The VMI family was out in force at the Library of Virginia on the evening of Feb. 7 for the 2025 VMI Legislative Reception. This annual event in Richmond is hosted by the Institute as a way of expressing its thanks to the members of the General Assembly, key legislative staff, and government executives for their support—financial and otherwise—of VMI.
Why I VMI: Waterbury '14
“I just love VMI. Every event that I’m involved in fills my heart.” That’s how Abby (Dawson) Waterbury ’14 describes her commitment to the Institute—a commitment that began during her cadetship and was furthered immediately after graduation when she began getting involved with alumni chapter events. Now, Waterbury sees VMI as foundational to her success.
Father-Daughter Skiing Duo
Phil Harris ’03 and his 8-year-old daughter, Kennedy, may be new to competitive skiing, but they have become fierce contenders on the slopes. The father-daughter duo have been racking up medals at competitions across the region and nation, all while making lasting family memories.
Daniels '61: A Purposeful Life
On the last day of his life, Jonathan Myrick Daniels ’61 awoke in a jail in Hayneville, Alabama. This was his first time in jail, but he now had 6 days of incarceration under his belt. All this because Daniels had joined a peaceful protest carrying signs asking for “equal treatment for all” and “no back doors.” Daniels was hot, tired, and hungry, but he was to be released this day—Aug. 20, 1965.
